Bears Lose Last Three At Corpus Christi Tournament

The Brown softball team lost its last three games of the March Madness Softball Tournament at Texas A&M Corpus Christi. The team was 0-5 at the tournament and holds a current record of 2-9.

On Saturday, the Bears dropped a 6-3 decision to host Texas A&M, getting out-hit 12-7 in the contest. Sophomore right fielder Lauren Wong (Mountain View, CA) went 2 for 4 at the plate, driving in one run and scoring one for the Bears, while sophomores Erin Durlesser (Santa Monica, CA) and Cara Howe (Missouri City, TX) each picked up one hit and one RBI. Senior co-captain Ellie Blake (Downers Grove, IL) was credited with the loss on the mound, and gave up three earned runs.

The last game on Saturday was against New Mexico, the team that had defeated Brown 11-2 the day before. This time it was a shutout, as the Lobos took six innings to defeat the Bears by a score of 8-0. Freshman Blair Smith (Independence, MO) was the only multi-hitter for Brown, going 2 for 3 at the plate. Blake again earned the pitching loss, allowing three earned runs in her brief stint on the mound, but Aleana Sutton (West Hartford, CT) threw the majority of the game, and Durlesser also saw some time.

In the last contest of the tournament, held on Sunday, Brown faced Centenary College in the consolation game. After dropping an 11-7 decision on Friday to the Centenary Ladies, this time Brown was edged out by a 6-4 score. Wong led the Bears at the plate again, batting 2 for 4, while Durlesser and Angie Galt (Silver Spring, MD) were the only other two players to pick up a hit for the Bears, who struggled offensively in the contest. Melissa Brown (Moreno Valley, CA) earned the loss on the mound, her second of the season, while Sutton and Blake also saw some time pitching.

The Bears continue their Texas tour, taking on Southwest Texas on Monday at 2:00 p.m., and facing Texas San Antonio on Tuesday at 1:00 p.m.
