Bears Fall To Friars 6-4; Tie 3-3 In Second Game

The Brown softball team dropped a 6-4 decision to Providence College on Tuesday afternoon before tying the Friars 3-3 in the second contest. The game was called for darkness after ten full innings had been played. The Bears are now 7-36-1 overall, while Providence improves to 23-26-1 overall.

The Bears came out strong in the first contest, scoring three runs in the first inning on an RBI single by Cara Howe (Missouri City, TX) and a two-run triple by Blair Smith (Independence, MO). The Friars came back and closed the gap to 4-2 after five innings, and then rallied for three runs in the sixth to take the lead. Melissa Brown (Moreno Valley, CA) pitched a complete game for the Bears, giving up only four hits and two earned runs in the 6-4 loss. Robyn West (Saratoga Springs, NY) earned the victory for the Friars, and Cori Van Dusen (Riverside, CA) was credited with the save. Brown's Julia Iudicello (McLean, VA) batted a game-high 3-for-4 with one run and one RBI, while both Lauren Wong (Mountain View, CA) and Erin Durlesser (Santa Monica, CA) picked up two hits in the contest.

Providence started the scoring in the second game, when Nicole Nelson (Belle Harbor, NY) hit an RBI single in the first inning. The Friars scored again in the third on a solo homerun by Amber Carr (Ventura, CA), but the Bears answered with three runs in the bottom of the third. Iudicello drove in two runs with her eighth triple of the season, and Durlesser drove in one run with her tenth double of the season. Providence's Jamie Ferreira (Fall River, MA) scored on a wild pitch in the fifth inning to tie the game, which was eventually called for darkness after the tenth. Durlesser pitched a complete game for Brown, giving up two earned runs on six hits, and Van Dusen pitched a complete game for the Friars, also giving up two earned runs on four hits.

The Bears will play their last doubleheader of the 2001 season this Thursday at home, when they take on the UMass Minutewomen at 3:00 p.m.
