The Brown softball team swept Fairfield in a doubleheader on Wednesday, April 28. Brown's victories came by a 9-run margin after five innings of play in game one and 8-2 in game two. With the wins, the Bears improve to 17-18 overall.
In game one, the Bears scored three runs in the first en-route to a 9-0 victory over the Stags. Brown added three runs in the second and two in the fourth to clinch the victory.
On the mound, junior Uchenna Omokaro picked up her first shut-out of the season for Brown, scattering two hits and striking out five in five innings of work. She is now 6-3 on the season.
In game two the Bears jumped out in front of the Stags in the second inning, 2-0. Sophomore Jaimie Wirkowski led off the inning with a single and scored Brown's first run on a groundout by freshman Andrea Miranda. Brown scored the Bears' second run after sophomore Sarah Wilson singled to right.
With two outs and runners on first and second, Omokaro picked up an RBI with a double to centerfield. Sophomore Rachel Fleitell then broke the game open with a single to right center to knock in two more runs for the Bears. Wirkowski extended Brown's lead to 7-0 with a two-run double up the middle.
The Stags chipped away at the Bears' lead and tallied two runs in the sixth, but Brown answered back in the bottom of the inning to tack on a run, taking an 8-2 lead.
Freshman Sara Corrigan-Gibbs earned her fourth win of the season, giving up two runs on six hits and striking out a season-high of 13.
Brown will return to action when they host Yale for their last doubleheader of the season on Saturday, May 1 at 1:00 p.m.
