Ithaca, NY - The Brown softball team dropped two games of a doubleheader to Cornell on Sunday Apr. 27. The Bears fell in game one 6-1 and 2-0 in game two. Brown is now 14-18 overall and 4-5 in the Ivy League.
The Bears quickly took a 1-0 lead in the opening frame of game one with an RBI single by junior Laura Leonetti. Cornell went on to score three runs in the third to grab a 3-1 lead. The Big Red added three insurance runs in the fifth to take the win 6-1. Kate Varde drove in one with an RBI bunt single and Lauren May hit a two-run homer in the inning.
Sophomore Uchenna Omokaro recorded the loss on the mound. In 5.0 innings, she struck-out two and allowed six runs on three hits. Freshman Marcia Abbott pitched an inning of relief with no runs, one hit and one struck-out.
In game two, Cornell scored two runs in the second inning and held on the rest of the way to earn the sweep. Sophomore Marissa Berkes had a four game win streak snapped with the loss on the mound. In six complete innings of work, Berkes allowed just two runs on five hits with four strikeouts and no walks.
Omokaro recorded two of the Bears three hits in the game, upping her batting average over the .300 mark to .311. Senior Erin Durlesser ripped a double to centerfield in the fourth for the Bears as well.
Brown continues action tomorrow, Apr. 28 at Columbia. The game was originally scheduled to be played on Saturday Apr. 26 but was postponed due to rain.
