Providence, RI -
The Brown University softball team (12-26, 5-15 Ivy) finished off the 2009 season with two 5-1 losses to Yale University (22-22, 11-9 Ivy) this afternoon at the Erickson Athletic Complex. Seniors Michelle Moses (Cooper City, FL) and Kelsey Wilson (Monterey, CA) were honored today as the two played in their finals games of their collegiate careers.
The first game of the afternoon was a pitchers dual, as both teams were held scoreless through the first five innings of play by Brown’s Moses and Yale’s Rebecca Wojciak. Yale senior Megan Enyeart hit a double to score the first run of the game in the top of the sixth inning to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 edge. Brown junior short stop Katie Rothamel (Brentwood, TN) answered back with an RBI single to right center to knot the game at 1-1 in bottom of the inning.
With one out in the top of the seventh with the bases loaded, Yale’s Katie Yanagisawa hit a single up the middle to bring in a run to extend the team’s lead to 2-1, while another run crossed home after an error to put the score at 3-1. Yale’s Katie Edwards then singled to score two more runs taking a 5-1 lead to win the game.
Wojciak earned the win to move to 7-11 on the season, pitching a complete game giving up just one run on four hits while striking out four Brown batters. Moses took the loss, giving up five runs (only two earned) on 10 hits. She struck out three batters and moved to 5-8 to finish the year.
The Bears tried to rally with two outs in the bottom of the second inning when Strobel drilled a double to the right center field fence, and Melvin advanced her to third with a shallow fly to right field for a single. With runners in scoring position, sophomore Danielle Comissiong (St. Thomas, VI) hit a pop up to right to end the inning.
The first run of the game was scored by Yale’s Lexi Peacok, who hit a hard grounder up the middle to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning.
Next, sophomore third baseman Mariclaire Rebman Yale nailed a triple down the right field line to score two runs in the top of the fifth inning to increase the Bulldogs lead to 3-0. Meg Johnson hit a single down the left field line and advanced to second on the throw, scoring two runs to take a 5-0 lead in the sixth.
Brown’s Rothamel arrived on first on a walk in the bottom of the sixth inning, and Wilson singled to right field. A passed ball advanced runners to second and third base, while a ground out to short stop by Strobel scored Rothamel to decrease Bruno’s deficit to four, 5-1.
Chaddock held Yale scoreless in the seventh, while a singly by Sandra Mastrangelo (White Plains, NY) moved sophomore Danielle Comissiong (St. Thomas, VI) over to third with two outs. But that was as close as the Bears would get, as the game ended in Yale’s favor, 5-1.
Strobel led the offense today going 3-of-6 with an RBI, followed by Wilson and Melvin going 2-of-6. Sophomore Emily Chaddock received the loss on the mound for Bruno, giving up one run on two hits.
