Brown Sweeps Harvard in Doubleheader, 8-6 and 9-5

The Brown softball team swept Harvard in a doubleheader on Sunday, April 25. Brown defeated Harvard 8-6 in game one and came back from a 5-0 deficit to win game two, 9-5. With the sweep, the Bears improve to 15-18 overall and 8-4 in the Ivy League.

A four run sixth inning propelled the Bears past the Crimson, 8-6 in game one.

After the Crimson scored first on two hits in the first the Bears came back in the bottom of the inning to take a 2-1 lead on a two-run homerun by senior Laura Leonetti.

Leonetti put the Bears ahead, 4-1 in the third with a one-out single though the middle, scoring junior Uchenna Omokaro who led off with a walk and sophomore Rachel Fleitell who bunted for a base hit.

Harvard regained the lead 5-4 taking advantage of two Brown errors in the fourth. The Crimson then added an insurance run in the fifth on a solo homerun over the left field fence to go out in front 6-4.

After sophomore Jaimie Wirkowski reached on an error by the left fielder and freshman Courtney Jenkins singled to right, the Bears came within one on an RBI single by senior Melisssa Brown. Omokaro helped herself after singling through the left side, putting the Bears on top 7-6. Sophomore Mary Seid added an insurance run for the Bears' with an RBI single.

Omokaro earned her third win on the mound for Brown scattering eight hits and giving up six runs, three earned.

In game two, Harvard broke a scoreless tie in the fourth, taking a 5-0 lead on back to back home-runs.

However, the Bears threatened in the sixth, closing in on the Crimson 5-3 with a three-run shot over the centerfield fence by Wirkowski.

In the bottom of the seventh, Brown brought the game within one with an RBI single to left by Seid. Leonetti came through on the next a bat and ripped a single to centerfield to tie the score at 5-5. Jenkins whacked the game winner, a walk-off grand slam to clinch the victory for the Bears, 9-5.

Omokaro came into relieve freshman Sara Corrigan Gibbs in the fourth inning and earned the victory shutting down the Crimson for the remainder of the game.

Brown out hit Harvard 9-5 and had key performances by Leonetti who went 2-3 with two hits, two runs and 1 RBI and Wirkowski and Jenkins who each notched home runs in the game.

Brown will return to action when they host Fairfield University for a doubleheader on Wednesday, April 25 at 3:00 p.m.
