Bears Split With Fairfield, 3-0 And 6-3

The Brown softball team picked up a 3-0 win and a 6-3 loss against the Stags of Fairfield University on Tuesday afternoon in Providence. The Bears are now 7-31 overall, while the Stags move to 33-17-1.

The Bears had three players go 2-for-3 at the plate to give them the edge over the opposition in the first contest. Blair Smith (Independence, MO) got the first of her two hits when she nailed a solo homerun in the second inning, and picked up her second when she drove in Brown's third run in the bottom of the sixth. Sophomores Lauren Wong (Mountain View, CA) and Erin Durlesser (Santa Monica, CA) also had two hits and scored the Bears' second and third runs, respectively, in the sixth inning. Fairfield's Ellen Sarosy (Howard Beach, NY) was the lone Stag to have a multi-hit game, as Melissa Brown (Moreno Valley, CA) earned her first victory on the mound by scattering six hits in seven innings pitched. Mellissa Santos (Pepperell, MA) was tagged with the loss for the Stags.

Despite out-hitting Fairfield 10-7 in the second contest and holding a 3-0 lead through the fifth inning, the Bears dropped a 6-3 decision after giving up six unanswered runs in the sixth. Five different Stags picked up one hit apiece and scored one run, while Katie Caputi (Harrington, CT) led the team at the plate going 2-for-3 with a run, a triple, and three RBI. For the Bears, Wong was 3-for-4 and Durlesser was 2-for-4 with a double, a run, and an RBI. Fairfield's Marissa Beemer (Chino Hills, CA) picked up her second win on the mound this season and Heather Yarashas (Bound Brook, NJ) was credited with the save. Durlesser picked up the loss for the Bears.

The Brown softball team has its next doubleheader on the road tomorrow, April 25, when it takes on URI at 3:00 p.m.
