Brown Softball Splits With Central Connecticut State, 4-3 And 8-2PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Brown softball team picked up a 4-3 eight-inning loss and an 8-2 victory against the Central Connecticut State Blue Devils in Providence on Thursday afternoon. The Bears' record now stands at 6-26, while the Blue Devils move to 7-25.
In the first contest, Brown took a 3-1 lead in the fourth inning after Blair Smith (Independence, MO) hit an RBI single to left field that scored freshman pitcher Melissa Brown (Moreno Valley, CA). The Bears held on to their lead until the top of the seventh, when CCSU came back to tie it up with the help of a double by Christy DePeano (Stratford, CT) and some costly field mistakes by the Bears. Jenny Gawron (Southington, CT) hit in the winning run with a double to right center in the top of the eighth to put the Blue Devils ahead, 4-3, and Brown could not get the tying run in the bottom of the inning. Blue Devil pitcher Kelly Germaine (Newington, CT) earned her fourth win of the season on the mound, while Melissa Brown was tagged with her fifth loss.
Freshman catcher Angie Galt (Silver Spring, MD) had a phenomenal offensive second game, leading the Bears to an 8-2 victory. She went 3-for-3 at the plate with a double and a homerun, drove in four runs and scored three. Sophomore Erin Durlesser (Santa Monica, CA) earned the victory on the mound, giving up only two Blue Devil hits and one earned run in seven innings while striking out seven. Cara Howe (Missouri City, TX) was 2-for-3 with a double and Julia Iudicello (McLean, VA) was 1-for-3 with an RBI triple.
The Bears have their next doubleheader on the road this weekend, when they travel to Harvard on Saturday. The first game is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
