Providence, RI - With the a scoreless game heading into the bottom of the fifth inning of game one, Brown (6-11-1, 0-2) got the bats going, scoring three runs to jump out to a 3-0 lead over in state rival URI. With a repeat performance in the second game the Bears once again struck in the bottom of the fifth frame getting three runs, building a 6-1 lead. Junior Mary Seid (Spring Valley, CA) lead the Bears in game one, going 2-3 with an RBI and recording one of the Bear's three runs in the fifth inning.
In the bottom of the fifth inning in game one sophomore Melissa Ota (Irvine, CA) drew a leadoff walk and advanced t second on a bunt from sophomore Liz Anderson (Oak Hill, VA). Ota came in when junior Rachel Fleitell (Nutley, NJ) hit a single to left field for the Bear's first run. Fleitell stole second to put herself in scoring position for Seid. Seid lined the ball to center field where the Rams fielder had trouble fielding the ball and had it roll past her to the fence. Feitell rounded towards home padding the Bear's lead while Seid ended up at third base with two outs. Junior Jaimie Wirkowski (Edison, NJ) brought in Seid when she hit the ball to center field for the Bear's third run of the game.
The Rams closed the gap to two runs in the top of the sixth, but that would be it as senior Uchenna Omokaro (Hercules, CA) recorded her fourth win of the season, giving up one run on five hits and struck out six in six innings on the mound for Brown.
In game two the Bears went ahead early, getting a three run lead after two having two of the three runs come in on passed balls. The fifth inning once again proved to be the deciding factor as the Bears were able to cashing in on the Rams costly mistakes to go up 6-1. Leading off the inning was Wirkowski drawing a walk and was moved over to third on a single from sophomore Courtney Jenkins (Piedmont, CA) and error. Wirkowski later scored on a past ball to have the Bears go up 4-0. Pinch runner freshman LaQuisha Pierre-Louis (Miramar, FL) came in to run for Jenkins and got herself in scoring position, stealing second and taking third on a past ball. Pierre-Louis later came in on a walk when the bases were loaded for Brown's fifth run. Freshman Amy Baxter (Hollister, CA) crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly to center field by classmate Natalie Hewitt (Richmond, TX) to round out the scoring for the Bears. Senior Marissa Berkes (El Segundo, CA) got the win on the mound for the Bears, allowing one run on five hits in six innings.
The Bears will travel to Ithaca, NY Saturday, April 16, to take on Cornell for an Ivy League doubleheader match-up, having the first pitch thrown at 12:00 PM.
