Softball Sweeps Penn In Ivy Opener

Providence, RI - The Brown softball team opened up the 2003 Ivy League season with a pair of wins over the Penn Quakers on Sunday Apr. 13. The Bears cruised to a 10-0 victory in game one and took game two 6-3. The wins improve Brown to 11-12 on the season, winning seven of its last nine games.

Sophomore Uchenna Omokaro (Hercules, CA) pitched a no-hitter in game one, allowing no walks and striking out four. The Quakers had just two runners reach base, one on an error and one on a fielder's choice. Omokaro is now 6-3 on the season.

The Bears scored two runs in the opening frame and went on to hammer Penn with seven runs in the second. Brown added one more run in the fourth for a 10-0 final.

Leading the way for Brown was junior Laura Leonetti (Fresno, TX). Leonetti cleared the bases in the second inning with a grand slam over the leftfield fence. She also added two stolen bases and two runs.

Senior Lauren Wong (Mountain View, CA) went 2-3 in game one with two RBI and one run. Freshman Mary Seid (Spring Valley, CA) also went 2-3 with one RBI and one run. Freshman Jaimie Wirkowski (Edison, NJ) homered in the fourth inning, her second of the season. Wirkowski scored three runs and had two stolen bases as well.

In game two, freshman Marcia Abbott (La Jolla, CA) got the start on the mound. In 4.2 innings of work, she allowed three runs and had two strikeouts. The Quakers scored one run in the fourth and two in the fifth.

Sophomore Marissa Berkes (El Segundo, CA) came in to relieve Abbott with two outs in the fifth. Berkes allowed no hits or runs in 2.1 innings as the Bears took the lead in the bottom of the fifth, giving her the win on the mound.

Omokaro went 2-2 with an RBI and a run. Leonetti, Wirkowski, Wong, senior Erin Durlesser (Santa Monica, CA) and junior Melissa Brown (Moreno Valley, CA) all added one hit each.

Brown recorded the game winning RBI in the fifth when she doubled to left center, scoring Durlesser to give the Bears the lead for good.

Brown will make-up Saturday's game against Princeton, which was postponed due to rain, tomorrow, Monday Apr. 14 at 2:30 p.m.
