Hanover, Nh - The Brown University softball team (10-16, 4-6 Ivy) earned a split with Dartmouth College this afternoon at Sachem Field. Brown picked up a 2-1 victory in game one, but then fell 4-0 in the second game of the doubleheader.

Senior Michelle Moses (Cooper City, FL) earned the win for the Bears in the first game, as she pitched 5.1 innings and gave up just one run on Dartmouth's nine hits. Moses held the Big Green scoreless during the first three innings, while Brown earned the game's first run in the top of the third inning to take a 1-0 lead.

The Bears rallied with two outs when freshman Elaina Atherton (Sammamish, WA) hit a single to third base to bring home freshman Sandra Mastrangelo (White Plains, NY). Brown increased its lead to 2-0 in the top of the fourth inning when junior Katie Rothamel (Brentwood, TN) started off the inning with a double to left center. The Bears rallied again with two outs when freshman Kate Strobel (Denver, CO) doubled down the left field line to score Rothamel.

The Big Green's A Parker then started off the fourth inning with a homerun to left center to cut its deficit to one. Moses shut down the rest of the Dartmouth batters, and then junior Jessica Iwasaki (Cupertino, CA) came in for relief in the sixth inning to strike out two batters.

Atherton led the offense as she went 2-of-3 from the pate including one RBI, and Rothamel went 1-of-2 with a run.

Game two didn't go as well for the Bears, as Dartmouth kept Bruno scoreless to cruise to a 4-0 win. Iwasaki started at the mound for Brown and held off the Big Green offense for the first two innings, but then gave up four runs on three hits. Dartmouth gained a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning, and then scored back-to-back runs in the fifth and sixth inning to end the game. The Bears recorded four errors in the night cap, and only posted just one hit, a single by Rothamel.

The Bears will challenge Dartmouth again tomorrow in a doubleheader scheduled to start at noon.
