April 6, 2003

Providence, RI - The Brown softball team split a doubleheader match with the University of Maine on Sunday Apr. 6. The Bears scored the lone run of the game in the bottom of the seventh inning to earn a 1-0 victory. The Black Bears bounced back to take game two, 5-1. Brown is now 9-12 on the season and has won five of its last seven games.

Sophomore Uchenna Omokaro (Hercules, CA) got the start on the mound in game one and pitched a three-hit shutout. In seven complete inning of work, Omokaro struck out two and walked just one batter to earn her fifth victory of the season.

Brown recorded a hit in six of the seven innings and prior to the final inning had left a total of nine runners on base. The Bears finally brought in a run in the seventh inning when junior Melissa Brown (Moreno Valley, CA) doubled to left center. She then advanced to third on a passed ball and a pop foul deep to right field by freshman Jaimie Wirkowski (Edison, NJ) brought in Brown for the game-winning run.

The Bears totaled seven hits in the game with junior Laura Leonetti (Fresno, TX), freshman Sarah Hans (Berea, OH) and Wirkowski all recording two hits each.

In game two, sophomore Marissa Berkes (El Segundo, CA) was the starting pitcher. In three and two/thirds of work, she gave up eight hits and four earned runs as the Black Bears took a quick 2-0 lead in the top of the first.

Maine added three runs in the top of the fourth to take a decisive 5-1 lead.

Freshman Marcia Abbott (La Jolla, CA) came in to relieve Berkes with two outs in the fourth and allowed just one hit in three and one-thirds of work and no runs.

Brown scored its lone run in the bottom of the first. Wirkowski, Berkes and sophomore Candace Toth (Wookinville, WA) recorded the Bears three hits in the night cap.
