Providence, RI - The Brown softball team swept both games of a doubleheader against Sacred Heart Wednesday afternoon in its home opener. The Bears took game one 4-3 in a come from behind victory and edged the Pioneers in game two, 3-2. Brown improves to 8-11 overall with the pair of wins.
Freshman Marcia Abbott (La Jolla, CA) got the start on the mound in game one for the Bears, recording her first collegiate win. Abbott pitched all seven innings and allowed just one hit.
The Pioneers took a 3-0 lead in the top of the third when freshman Jen Place recorded Sacred Heart's lone hit of the game, bringing in one run. The Pioneers added two more runs in the inning.
The Bears scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth to take the lead, 4-3. The inning began with sophomore Uchenna Omokaro (Hercules, CA) reaching first when a pitch hit her.
Brown followed with a double and junior Laura Leonetti (Fresno, TX) singled up the middle to bring in two runs. After a single by freshman Jaimie Wirkowski (Edison, NJ), senior Erin Durlesser (Santa Monica, CA) doubled to bring in Wirkowski for the game-winning run.
In game two, sophomore Marissa Berkes (El Segundo, CA) picked up her third win of the season, pitching all seven innings, striking out four and allowing just two runs.
Brown picked up two runs in the bottom of the first when freshman Rachel Fleitell (Nutley, NJ) singled to second base and Leonetti walked. Wirkowski then doubled to left center, bringing in both Fleitell and Leonetti.
The Bears got their third and final run of the day on a home run by Durlesser in the bottom of the second.
Sacred Heart added one more run, after scoring in the top of the first, in the top of the fourth but fell short.
Brown continues action on Saturday Apr. 5 at home versus Syracuse starting at noon.
