Bears Fall To St. Mary's, 7-0, 8-7

Moraga, CA - After a tough game one loss, the Bears (1-7) came out strong in game two, coming from behind three times to tie the Gaels in an exciting 8-7 loss. Behind senior Uchenna Omokaro's (Hercules, CA) three RBIs in game two, Brown had St. Mary's on their heels, getting 12 hits, but fell to St. Mary's in the bottom of the seventh inning giving the Gaels their seventh victory of the season.

In a tough first game, the Bears were able to muster one hit, which came off the bat of junior shortstop Mary Seid (Spring Valley, CA) in the fourth inning. Omokaro only allowed two hits in the first four innings, but St. Mary's exploded offensively in the bottom of the fifth inning getting six runs, on four hits, giving the Gaels a six run lead going into the final two innings of the game.

In game two, the Bears' bats came alive, recording 12 hits in the 8-7 loss. St. Mary's had a one run lead at the end of one. Brown quickly countered in the top of the second, when Seid had a lead-off single and advanced to second on sophomore Liz Anderson's (Oak Hill, VA) single to center field. With two outs and runners on first and second, Omokaro hit her first of two doubles down the left field line scoring Seid, tying the game at one.

In the following inning, Brown got a one run lead when junior Jaimie Wirkowski (Edison, NJ) crossed the plate on a RBI single from sophomore Andrea Miranda (Davie, FL) putting the score 2-1 with St. Mary's coming to bat in the third. The Gaels brought in two runs in the bottom half of the inning getting the lead back, with the score now standing at 3-2.

With the game tied 3-3 going into the fifth, the Bears got three runs taking a 6-3 lead. Freshman Amy Baxter (Hollister, CA) got things started, getting a single and later scored on an Anderson double. With two outs and runners in scoring position Omokaro got her second double of the game bringing in Miranda and Anderson for the three run lead. Omokaro finished the game going 3-4, with three RBIs, two doubles and one walk.

Going into the seventh inning, Brown found themselves down by one, having St. Mary's score two runs in the fifth and sixth innings putting the score at 7-6. Seid recorded her second hit of the game, getting a leadoff, left field single. The Bear's shortstop went 2-3 in game two, scoring two runs. Seid was bunted over to second by Miranda, to put the Bears in striking distance. With one out and Seid in scoring position, junior Sarah Wilson (Rancho Sante Fe, CA) recorded the RBI, bringing in Seid and tying the game at 7-7 after seven and a half innings of play. In the bottom half of the final inning the Gaels got the winning single with bases loaded and one out for the 8-7 victory. On the mound for the Bears was senior Marissa Berkes (El Segundo, CA) who gave up six earned runs on eights hits in 6.1 innings, striking out four in the loss.

The Bears will have their 2005 home opener on Tuesday, April 5, when they face Boston University at Erickson Field for a 3:00 PM doubleheader.
