Providence, RI - The Brown University softball team (7-13, 1-3 Ivy) earned the sweep against the University of Rhode Island (7-20, 1-3 A10) at the Erickson Athletic Complex on Tuesday afternoon. Brown defeated the Rams 4-3 in game one, and then edged Rhode Island 3-1 in game two to remain undefeated at home.
Freshman Trish Melvin (Wexford, PA) earned the win at the mound in game one, as she pitched 6.1 solid innings to give up just three runs on two hits to increase her record to 2-3 on the season. Senior Michelle Moses (Cooper City, FL) received the save, closing out the last two batters of the sixth to end the game. After a 1-2-3 inning pitched by Melvin to start the game, Bruno came out hot to take a 3-0 lead in the first inning of play. With the bases loaded, senior Kelsey Wilson (Monterey, CA) hit a sacrifice fly to center field to put the Bears up 1-0. Freshman Jackie Giovanniello (Floral Park, NY) sent a single to right field and brought in Brown's next two runs to increase its lead to 3-0.
After another two scoreless innings for the Rams, the Bears tallied another run in the bottom of the third inning. Kate Strobel (Denver, CO) smacked a double to right field as Giovanniello's single brought in Strobel to increase Brown's lead to 4-0 heading into the fourth inning.
There was just one hit recorded by both teams in the next three innings, but the Rams made a run in the top of the seventh. With the bases load, Moses entered the ball game and gave up a three-RBI double, but shut down URI's next batter to end the game.
Rhode Island scored first in game two after Amanda Sbei singled to left field to drive in Stefani Poedubicky in the top of the third inning. Brown answered right back when sophomore Lindsay Rice (Bradford, RI) singled up the middle to bring home junior Andrea Browne (Vineland, NJ). Strobel drilled a double to right field and almost scored Rice, but a great throw by Brittany Julich got her at the plate to tie the ball game at 1-1.
The Bears were able to secure two more unanswered runs in the fourth to take the lead and earn the victory. Melvin singled to right field to bring home senior Kelsey Wilson (Monterey, CA), as Browne followed with a sacrifice fly that scored sophomore Emily Chaddock (Laguna Niguel, CA) to increase the squad's lead to 3-1. Pitching a complete game, Moses continued to shut down the Rhode Island batters by giving up just one run on six hits, while she also struck out 10 batters. Moses increased her record to 4-3 on the year, while URI's Stacey Stanovich dropped to 0-1.
Strobel led Brown's offense today hitting four-of-six from the plate, including two doubles, and scored two runs. Giovanniello led with a team-high three RBI, as she hit three-of six. Rice and Katie Rothamel both gave a solid effort, as they went two-for-three from the plate.
The Bears will host Ivy League action this weekend when it takes on the Penn Quakers for a doubleheader on Saturday, April 4, at 12:30 p.m., followed by a doubleheader against Columbia on Sunday, April 5, beginning at 12:30 p.m.
