Softball Drops Two To Santa Clara, 2-0, 4-1

Santa Clara, CA - The Bears (1-5) fell to Santa Clara this afternoon, March 30, in Santa Clara, CA dropping to the Broncos 2-0, in the first game and 4-1 in the second.

In game one, the Bears and Broncos were held to a scoreless tie until the bottom of the fifth inning, when Santa Clara tallied the first run of the game. The Broncos later tacked on an insurance run in the following inning, giving them a two run lead. The Bears threaten in the top of the seventh inning when junior Jaimie Wirkowski (Edison, NJ) singled to left field with one out. Brown's next batter sophomore Courtney Jenkins (Piedmont, CA) doubled to left center, advancing Wirkowski to third, but that would be as close as the Bears got, having their next to batters ground and fly out.

Senior Uchenna Omokaro (Hercules, CA) recorded the loss for Brown, giving up two earned runs on four hits in six innings striking out four batters.

In game two, Santa Clara jumped out to an early one run lead in the bottom of the second inning. The Bears quickly countered in the top of third getting three singles to tie the game at one. Junior Mary Seid (Spring Valley, CA) recorded a lead -off single in the inning, and advanced to second and third on wild pitches. Seid got some help from Omokaro, when she hit an infield single to tie the game at 1-1 after three.

The Bears threatened to take the lead in the top of the fifth inning, when Omokaro had a lead off single, off a bunt, and was advanced to third on two consecutive singles, but was thrown out before crossing the plate to end the inning. Santa Clara took the lead for good in the bottom half of the inning and added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning pushing the game out of reach for the Bears. Senior Marissa Berkes (El Segundo, CA) recorded the loss for Brown sacrificing four runs on seven hits, striking out three in six innings on the hill for the Bears.

Brown will wrap up their week long California trip Thursday, March 31, when they travel to Moraga, CA to take on St. Mary's for a 4:00 PM ET doubleheader match-up.
