San Diego, CA - The Bears softball team (6-11) dropped its final game in its California roadtrip, 8-0, against the San Diego State Aztecs (23-12) on Wednesday night.
The Aztecs took a 4-0 lead in the second inning, after San Diego State's Kasey Mytinger singled to left field. Then, Taryin Castillas singled to center field advancing the runner to third base. A throwing error by Brown's catcher Amy Baxter (Hollister, CA) scored the Aztecs runner and advanced Castillas to third base. A couple more San Diego got on base, and were brought home by Brittany Knudsen's single and Tamani Wells' triple.
The third inning was more of the same, as the Aztecs scored three more runs to put the score at 7-0. The Aztecs' three runs in the third came on an RBI single by Dani Sidoti, a wild pitch that allowed Castillas to score, and an RBI groundout by Marquez. The Bears, who couldn't answer back, went hitless for all five innings, as San Diego's pitcher, Christina Ross pitched her first collegiate perfect game.
The Aztecs scored one more run in the fifth and final inning, which was sparked by Jane Protugal's double that knocked in pinch-runner Christine Kulick from second base to end the game at 8-0.
Brown freshman Jessica Iwasaki (Cupertino, CA) started at the mound for the Bears, as she pitched two innings and gave up six runs. Sophomore Kristen Schindler (Caldwell, NJ) pitched the next two, and allowed two hits and two runs and sophomore Michelle Moses finished the game off. Iwasaki received the loss (0-2) as San Diego's Ross received the win after retiring six Brown batters and pitching a perfect game.
Brown returns to Providence to open the Ivy League season with double headers against the Princeton Tigers on Saturday, March 31 and the Cornell Big Red on Sunday, April 1 at noon.
