Jacksonville, FL - The Brown University softball team (4-10) ended its spring trip to Florida with two losses to the University of North Florida (17-17) on Wednesday evening at the UNF Softball Complex. The Bears fell 2-0 in game one, and followed it up with a 12-10 loss to the Lady Ospreys, who are coming off a recent victory over No. 22 ranked Florida State.
North Florida jumped off to a 2-0 lead in the first inning after Britanie Block doubled to left center and advanced to third when Ariana Godwin put down a sacrifice bunt. Battaglia then scored Block after a double to left field, and once again UNF's Airen Payne sent a double to right center to score its second run of the inning.
After the first inning that saw three hits, freshman Trish Melvin (Wexford, PA) held the Lady Ospreys scoreless and allowed just one more hit in the game. Melvin moved to 1-2 on the year, as Devyn Findley received the win at the mound as she struck out nine Bears and allowed the squad to just three hits.
Jackie Giovanniello (Floral Park, NY) recorded Brown's first hit in the third after a single to left field, as sophomore Emily Chaddock (Laguna Niguel, CA) recorded a base hit in the fifth and sophomore Lindsay Rice (Bradford, RI) did the same in the sixth.
Game two was a different story, as both teams combined for 26 hits and scored 22 runs. While North Florida gained an immediate 1-0 lead in the first inning, the Bears bounced back in the second inning when Giovannielo's single to the right side brought home Melvin.
The Bears then gained a 4-1 lead when they scored three runs in the second inning off Shaina Dent on the mound for UNF. Chaddock's single to left field brought home Rice who reached first on an error. Then, Melvin knocked a double to left field and a single by Giovanniello tallied Bruno's second run when Chaddock crossed the plate. Elaine Atherton (Sammamish, WA) walked, which scored Bruno's third run of the inning to head into the bottom of the third inning with a three-run lead.
But the Lady Osprey's weren't going to back down, as they answered right back by scoring six runs to regain the lead, 7-4. But the Bears showed their resilience once again, as they clawed their way back with another three-run inning in the top of the fourth despite Brittany Cavelli entering the game at the mound to try to silence the Bears' attack. With one out Chaddock and Kate Strobel (Denver, CO) on second and third base, Melvin doubled to left center to bring in two runs. Then, Melvin scored after an illegal pitch, which tied the game 7-7.
UNF tallied one run in the fourth to regain a one-run lead, but Bruno put up another three-run inning in the fifth to put the score at 10-8. But UNF's Allyson Bailey provided the go-ahead run, clearing the bases with a two-out triple to left field in the bottom of the fifth that allowed the Lady Ospreys to turn its deficit into a one-run lead. Devyn Findley checked into the game in the sixth to earn the win and the save on the mound, as the offense sealed the victory with another run in the sixth to put the score at 12-10 to win the game.
Melvin lead the Bears' offense, going four-of-five from the plate to score four runs and tally two RBI. Senior Kelsey Wilson (Monterey, CA) also had a solid game going three-for-three with two RBI, and Giovanniello went three-of-four with three RBI.
Senior Michelle Moses (Cooper City, FL) began on the mound for Bruno, pitching three innings and giving up seven runs, while just three of those were earned. Sophomore Jessica Iwasaki (Cupertino, CA) came in to finish the game and received the loss, as she moves to 0-2 on the season. Iwasaki gave up five runs, four of which were earned, and struck out two batters.
Brown will now begin Ivy League play when it takes on Cornell in a doubleheader on Saturday, followed by a double header at Princeton.
