Fairfax, VA - The Brown softball team (6-2) went 2-0 in the first day of the George Mason softball tournament this afternoon. They first defeated Youngstown State 6-3, and then Morgan State 8-4.
YSU picked up the first run against the Bears, as Becky Hibner started the team off with a triple and was brought in by a double by teammate McKenzie Bedra. But the Bears scored two runs in the second, to jump ahead, 2-1.
The play was started off by freshman Whitney Lewis (Irvine, CA) as she reached first on an error by the Penguin's first baseman. Freshman Amanda Asay (Prince George, BC) walked, and Anderson singled and advanced to second on an error by YSU's left fielder to score Lewis. Then, freshman Andrea Browne (Vineland, NJ) hit a single to bring home Asay and put Brown ahead 2-1.
The Penguins tied it at 2-2 in the third, but the Bears were able to score two runs in both the fifth and seventh inning to give Brown its 6-3 victory. In the fifth, the Bears made their run with two outs. Baxter, who got on first after being hit by a pitch, advanced over to third base after Lewis put down a bunt for a single. Asay walked and Anderson singled, but advanced to second on a throw as both Lewis and Baxter scored.
The Bears' Baxter hit a homer in the seventh and brought in sophomore Kelsey Wilson who had walked, bringing the score to 6-3.
On the mound was sophomore Michelle Moses (Cooper City, FL) pitching 5.2 innings. She allowed just 11 hits, struck out four and walked just one batter. Sophomore Kristen Schindler (Caldwell, NJ) came in as a reliever.
Brown kept the offense rolling, as they defeated Morgan State (2-4), 8-4, in the second game of the George Mason tournament.
Although the score was scoreless after the first inning, Morgan State picked up the first two runs in the top of the second, leading 2-0. Although Wilson grounded out, the Bears' Baxter got on base after an error by the shortstop. Then, Lewis hit a single to left, advancing Baxter to second base. Asay answered with a single, scoring Baxter and moving Lewis to third base.
Anderson then grounded out to second, advancing Asay to second and scoring Lewis and putting the score at 2-2. The Bears picked up another run in the third, when Rothtamel tripled to right field with two outs. Wilson then singled up the middle, scoring Rothamel and making the score 3-2. In the fourth, the Bears scored one, after an Anderson double scored Asay who got on after a single.
The offense kept on rolling, as they picked up four more runs in the fifth inning. Lavine started the spree of with a walk, and advanced to second on a steal. Rothamel walked, and Lavine stole third, and Wilson walked to advance Rothamel to second. Then a single to third by Baxter scored Lavine and another single to left field by Lewis brought home Rothamel. Then, Asay hit a double, scoring both Baxter and Wilson to put the score 7-2.
Schindler was on the mound for the Bears, giving up just three hits, four runs, and two walks, while striking out six batters. Asay led Brown with three RBIs, followed by Anderson with two.
Morgan State was able to pick up one run in the top of the seventh, but it wasn't enough to catch up to the Bears. Brown will play Youngstown State again tomorrow, at 9 a.m., and then George Mason University at 1 p.m.
