Betsy Ahearn joined the Brown softball staff in the spring of
2009. Ahearn, who comes to the Bears from Wellesley College, spent
four seasons as the team's pitching coach. Ahearn also played under
the tutelage of both Brown Head Coach DeeDee Enabenter-Omidiji and
assistant coach Janet Maguire while attending Bridgewater State
College. Ahearn made an immediate impact at Wellesley College
during its inaugural season in 2005 as she helped the team to the
New England's Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC)
play-offs. The program subsequently made it to the NCAA Regionals
during her tenure in 2007 and 2008. Wellesley's pitching staff was
one of the best around, as it led the NEWMAC in many statistical
categories and fostered a two-time All-American pitcher. A pitching
instructor at Planet Pitching (one of the largest softball training
facilities in the Northeast) since 2005, Ahearn has worked with
pitchers from many local colleges and universities, as well as some
of the best young talent in the region. Ahearn earned her Bachelor
of Arts in Sociology while playing softball at Bridgewater State
College. She led her squad to four NCAA appearances including an
appearance in the Division III College World Series in 1999. Ahearn
was named to the MASCAC All-Conference and All-Region Team four
times, and was a 2001 All-American. She finished her career with
557 strikeouts and is ranked first for strikeouts in a game (18)
and strikeouts in a season (190).
