PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Junior Cat Seitz and sophomore Kaitlin Okimoto each registered two hits, but Brown University softball fell to Columbia University, 8-2, on Friday afternoon at the Brown Softball Field.
In the series opener of a three-game set, the Bears (8-19, 2-8 Ivy) scored one run in each of the fifth and seventh innings but could not rally after the visiting Lions (15-16, 7-6 Ivy) posted eight runs over the first three innings, including six runs in the top of the third.
Seitz (Poway, Calif.) finished 2-for-3 with an RBI and a walk while Okimoto (Burbank, Calif.) went 2-for-4 with a run scored. Freshman Anya Schmitz (Santa Barbara, Calif.) scored a run, and junior Meghan Wimmer (Boothwyn, Pa.) reached base safely in all four of her plate appearances.
Sophomore Emily Waters (Northridge, Calif.) threw 5.0 innings in relief, allowing two runs on four hits. Wimmer took the loss (3-6), giving up six runs on five hits with two strikeouts.
For Columbia, Madison Gott, Sommer Grzybek, and Amanda Nishihira each hit a home run in the third inning. Grzybek, Nishihira, and Max Ortega posted two RBIs apiece. In the circle, Erin Gallo earned the win (6-4), hurling 6.2 innings and permitting two runs on six hits with seven strikeouts.
The Lions took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first as Grzybek hit a sacrifice fly and Ortega brought home a run after absorbing a pitch.
Columbia extended its edge to 8-0 with six runs in the top of the third. Gott and Grzybek each hit a solo homer to start the frame. Nishihira closed the stanza's scoring with a two-run homer.
In the bottom of the fifth, Seitz laced a single to center field to score Okimoto, cutting the margin to 8-1. Junior Annie Scarangella (Tucson, Ariz.) forced home a run in the last of the seventh with a walk.
Next, Brown completes the three-game series with Columbia tomorrow, Saturday, Apr. 14, with a doubleheader beginning at 12:30 p.m.
