Softball Moves Columbia Home Series to Friday-Saturday Format

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown University softball will host Columbia University for a three-game series at the Brown Softball Field with a single game on Friday, Apr. 13 at 3:30 p.m. and a doubleheader on Saturday, Apr. 14 beginning at 12:30 p.m., adjusting the series from its original Saturday-Sunday format.

LAST TIME OUT
Junior Meghan Wimmer hit her sixth home run of the season, but Brown fell to the University of Rhode Island, 3-1, on Wednesday afternoon at the Brown Softball Field. In an Ocean State match-up, the Bears pulled within 2-1 in the bottom of the first on the solo homer, but the visiting Rams scored twice in the first and added an insurance run in the seventh to earn the win.

SCOUTING THE LIONS
Columbia brings a 14-16 overall record and a 6-6 Ivy League mark into this weekend's series. In Ancient Eight play, the Lions have won series against Penn (2-1) and Yale (2-1), while dropping series to Dartmouth (1-2) and Harvard (1-2). Taylor Trout (.416 average, 10 doubles, five homers, 21 RBIs) and Madison Gott (.339 average, 12 doubles, five homers, 25 RBIs) have led the Columbia offense. In the circle, the Lions have turned to Maura Lynch (3.43 ERA, 32.2 innings), Erin Gallo (3.74 ERA, 67.1 innings), and Madison Canby (4.01 ERA, 103.0 innings). 

TEAM STATS
As a team, Brown enters the weekend first in the Ivy League in triples (eight), third in doubles (41), third in slugging percentage (.411), third in on-base percentage (.356), first in sacrifice flies (11), third in sacrifice hits (19), and first in fielding percentage (.966). 

WIMMER DOES IT ALL
Senior pitcher/utility Meghan Wimmer (Boothwyn, Pa.) has performed well at both the plate and in the circle for the Bears. At the plate, she has hit .470 with 18 RBIs, seven doubles, and six home runs. In the circle, she has registered three complete games and posted a 6.30 ERA. Wimmer leads the Ivy League in batting average, on-base percentage (.543), and home runs (six), while ranking second in slugging percentage (.879) and third in walks (13) 

IN HER SEITZ
Junior Cat Seitz (Poway, Calif.) has posted a .352 batting average this season with 12 RBIs, nine doubles, and a home run. Seitz ranks third in the Ivy League in doubles. 

SCHMITZ STEPS RIGHT IN
Freshman Anya Schmitz (Santa Barbara, Calif.) has stepped in as the Bears' primary starter at second base and has notched a .325 batting average. She has tallied seven RBIs and five doubles and ranks second in the Ivy League with six sacrifice bunts. 

WATERS TAKES IVY PITCHER OF THE WEEK
Sophomore pitcher Emily Waters (Northridge, Calif.) gained Ivy League Pitcher of the Week honors on Apr. 2 after throwing her first career complete-game shutout against Penn on Apr. 1. She tossed the full 7.0 innings in a 4-0 win over Penn on Apr. 1, allowing just four hits in the shutout win. Waters tallied a 2.13 ERA over 26.1 innings on the week. 

SCHMITZ WINS IVY ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
Freshman Anya Schmitz (Santa Barbara, Calif.) gained Ivy League Rookie of the Week honors on Feb. 26 after earning All-Tournament Team accolades at the Hatter Invitational. Schmitz registered a .500 batting average (8-for-16) with five runs, two sacrifice hits, an RBI, and a stolen base on the week.

After finishing out its three-game series with Columbia, Brown plays at Providence on Tuesday, Apr. 17 at 4:00 p.m. before returning to Ivy play with a three-game series at Yale with a doubleheader on Saturday, Apr. 21 beginning at 12:30 p.m. and a single game on Sunday, Apr. 22 at 12:30 p.m.
