PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Junior Meghan Wimmer hit her sixth home run of the season, but Brown University softball fell to the University of Rhode Island, 3-1, on Wednesday afternoon at the Brown Softball Field.
In an Ocean State match-up, the Bears (8-18) pulled within 2-1 in the bottom of the first on the solo homer, but the visiting Rams (9-23) scored twice in the first and added an insurance run in the seventh to earn the win.
Wimmer (Boothwyn, Pa.) notched her seventh career home run while junior Sofia Venegas (La Mirada, Calif.) went 2-for-3.
Senior pitcher Katie Orona (Pueblo, Colo.) threw her second complete game of the season and the 39th of her career, tossing 7.0 innings and allowing three runs on seven hits in the loss (1-6).
For URI, Erica Robles and Hannah DeSousa each posted two hits. Sarah Gunderson earned the win (3-5), hurling 4.0 innings in the start and giving up one run on three hits with two strikeouts. Julia Waraksy picked up the save (1), pitching 3.0 innings in relief and permitting no runs on two hits.
In the top of the first, the Rams plated a pair of runs as Abby Fenbert brought in a run with a groundout and Yeager hit a sacrifice fly to right field.
The Bears responded in the last of the first as Wimmer lifted a solo shot to left field. Brown threatened again in the bottom of the fifth as Venegas led off the inning with a single and advanced to third base before the Rams escaped the frame.
The visitors added a run in the top of the seventh as Robles sent a double down the left field line to give the Rams a 3-1 edge.
Next, Brown hosts a three-game series against Columbia with a doubleheader on Saturday, Apr. 14 beginning at 12:30 p.m. and a single game on Sunday, Apr. 15 at 12:30 p.m.
