PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Senior Annie McGregor hit her third home run of the season, but Brown University softball dropped an Ivy League doubleheader to Cornell University, 8-4 and 11-3, on Saturday afternoon at the Brown Softball Field.
The Bears (8-16, 2-6 Ivy) held an early lead in game one before the visiting Big Red (10-14, 5-3 Ivy) rallied for the win and followed with a game two victory behind seven runs in the final two innings.
Junior Meghan Wimmer (Boothwyn, Pa.) went 4-for-7 with two runs, a double, and an RBI between the two games while McGregor (Carlsbad, Calif.) hit her 13th career home run in the bottom of the seventh in game two.
The series was originally slated for Cornell's Niemand-Robison Softball Field in Ithaca, N.Y., but the three-game set was moved to Brown due to weather.
Next, Brown completes the three-game series with Cornell tomorrow, Sunday, Apr. 8, with a single game at 12:30 p.m.
Game 1: Cornell 8, Brown 4
Junior Meghan Wimmer finished 3-for-4 with two runs and a double as Brown fell to Cornell in game one, 8-4.
The Bears held a 2-0 edge through three innings before the Big Red plated three runs in the top of the fourth and four runs in the top of the fifth.
Alongside Wimmer (Boothwyn, Pa.), junior Cat Seitz (Poway, Calif.) went 2-for-3, junior Annie Scarangella (Tucson, Ariz.) drove in two runs, and freshman Anya Schmitz (Santa Barbara, Calif.) scored two runs.
For Cornell, Sarah Murray tallied five RBIs, and Erin Rockstroh went 3-for-5. Lisa Nelson earned the complete-game win (6-4), tossing 7.0 innings and giving up four runs on seven hits with five strikeouts.
The Bears scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the first as Schmitz scored on a wild pitch before Seitz brought home Wimmer with a single up the middle.
The Big Red responded with three runs in the top of the fourth, including a two-run double from Murray, to take a 3-2 edge. The visitors extended their advantage to 7-2 in the top of the fifth behind a three-run double from Murray.
A walk from Scarangella forced home a run in the last of the fifth before Cornell registered a sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh to keep the score at 8-3. Scarangella drove home a run with a single to left field in the home half of the seventh.
Game 2: Cornell 11, Brown 3

The Bears remained within 3-2 through four innings prior to the visiting Big Red outscoring the hosts, 8-1, over the final three frames.
For the Big Red, Kate Jencarelli drove in three runs while Megan Murray and Tori Tagashi both posted two hits. Katie Lew gained the win (4-8), hurling a complete-game 7.0 innings and conceding three runs on five hits with five strikeouts.
Jencarelli started the game's scoring with a three-run double to right center in the top of the third.
The Bears cut their deficit to 3-2 in the last of the third as Wimmer plated a run with a single through the left side, and Seitz drove in a run with a groundout.
Cornell responded with one run in the fifth inning, two in the sixth, and five in the seventh. Brianna Straley hit a two-run triple in the sixth, and Bridgette Rooney brought in two runs with a single in the seventh.
McGregor closed the game's scoring with a home run down the left field line in the bottom of the seventh.
Wimmer absorbed the loss (3-4), allowing six runs on seven hits with two strikeouts over 5.1 innings.
