Softball Pushes Yale, Drops Doubleheader in Final Road Games

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Brown University softball challenged Yale University in both games, but the visitors fell in each end of an Ivy League North Division doubleheader, 6-4 and 7-5, on Saturday afternoon at DeWitt Family Field.

In their final road games of the season, the Bears (14-29, 4-14 Ivy) held a lead midway through game one and nearly rallied in game two before the Bulldogs (17-26, 10-8 Ivy) took the first two games of the clubs' four-game series.

Sophomore Meghan Wimmer (Boothwyn, Pa.) went 4-for-6 at the plate on the day with three doubles and two RBIs while throwing her eighth complete game of the season in game two.

Sophomore Cat Seitz (Poway, Calif.) finished 3-for-5 with three runs and a double between the two contests, and junior Annie McGregor (Carlsbad, Calif.) hit her eighth home run of the season in the nightcap.

Next, Brown closes the regular season with a home doubleheader against Yale tomorrow, Sunday, Apr. 30, beginning at 12:30 p.m. on Senior Day.

Game 1: Yale 6, Brown 4

Seniors Christina Andrews (Southlake, Texas) and Julia Schoenewald (Jamison, Pa.) each hit RBI triples, but Brown fell to Yale in game one, 6-4.

The Bears plated three runs in the top of the fourth to take a 4-3 lead before the host Bulldogs scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth to take the win.

Supporting Andrews and Schoenewald, junior Grayson Metzger (Severna Park, Md.) went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run while freshman Kaitlin Okimoto (Burbank, Calif.) hit a double and scored a run.

Yale's Lindsay Efflandt earned the win (5-7), tossing a complete-game 7.0 innings and permitting four runs, all earned, on five hits and four walks with one strikeout. Shelby Kennedy and Rachel Paris each drove in two runs for the Bulldogs.

Brown took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first as junior Annie McGregor (Carlsbad, Calif.) brought home a run with a ground ball. The Bulldogs responded with two runs in the bottom of the second and one more in the last of the third to pull ahead, 3-2.

The Bears regained a lead at 4-3 with three runs in the top of the fourth. Andrews started the rally with an RBI triple to right center before Metzger plated a run with a single to center field. Schoenewald capped the burst, driving a run home with a triple down the right field line.

Yale moved ahead, 6-4, with three runs in the last of the fourth, including a pair of unearned runs.

In the circle, junior Katie Orona (Pueblo, Colo.) did not allow an earned run in 3.0 innings of relief. Senior Gina Chieffallo (Eynon, Pa.) took the loss (2-1), giving up five runs, four earned, on four hits with two strikeouts over 3.0 innings.

Game 2: Yale 7, Brown 5

Junior Annie McGregor (Carlsbad, Calif.) hit a two-run home run, and sophomore Meghan Wimmer (Boothwyn, Pa.) tallied a two-run double and a complete game, but Brown dropped a 7-5 decision to Yale in game two in its final road contest of the year.

The Bears pulled within 5-3 of Yale in the third and within 7-5 in the seventh on McGregor's blast, but the host Bulldogs held on for the win.

At the plate, Wimmer finished the game 4-for-4 with three doubles and two RBIs while sophomore Cat Seitz (Poway, Calif.) went 3-for-4 with a double and two runs. Senior Christina Andrews (Southlake, Texas) scored two runs.

In the circle, Wimmer hurled a complete-game 6.0 innings, allowing seven runs, five earned, on eight hits in the loss (6-11).

Yale's Terra Jerpbak gained the win (7-8), throwing 6.0 innings and surrendering five runs, four earned, on nine hits with three strikeouts. Francesca Casalino picked up the save (1), coming in for 1.0 inning of relief with one strikeout. Allison Skinner and Rachel Paris each drove in three runs for the Bulldogs.

Wimmer gave the Bears a 2-0 lead in the top of the first, sending a two-run double to left field. Yale responded with three runs in the last of the first to take a 3-2 edge. The hosts added two more runs in the bottom of the second, moving ahead 5-2.

An RBI groundout from junior Grayson Metzger (Severna Park, Md.) pulled Brown within 5-3 in the top of the third. Yale plated one run in the fifth and another in the sixth to extend its lead to 7-3.

McGregor brought life to the Bears in the top of the seventh with a two-run homer over the wall in right center, but Brown could not complete the comeback.
