PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Senior Gina Chieffallo threw her first career shutout, and senior Julia Schoenewald hit a two-run home run as Brown University softball beat Harvard University, 4-0, on Thursday afternoon at the Brown Softball Field.
The Bears (14-27, 4-12 Ivy) scored twice in the fourth and twice in the fifth while blanking the Crimson (18-17, 9-7 Ivy) in an Ivy League North Division game rescheduled from Saturday, Apr. 22.
Chieffallo (Eynon, Pa.) tossed her second complete game of the season, allowing no runs on seven hits with two strikeouts over 7.0 innings and 100 pitches in the win (2-0).
Schoenewald (Jamison, Pa.) connected on her second home run of the season and the seventh of her career to break open a scoreless game and give Brown a 2-0 lead in the last of the fourth.
Sophomore Meghan Wimmer (Boothwyn, Pa.) went 2-for-3 with an RBI, junior Annie McGregor (Carlsbad, Calif.) finished 2-for-3 with a run, and freshman Kaitlin Okimoto (Burbank, Calif.) notched a 2-for-4 effort with a run.
With two outs and no score in the bottom of the fourth, senior Sarah Syrop (Kennesaw, Ga.) worked a walk to put a runner on base. Schoenewald then stepped to the plate and knocked a two-run homer over the wall in left center.
The Bears struck again in the bottom of the fifth as Okimoto and McGregor both singled to place runners on first and second with one out. Sophomore Cat Seitz (Poway, Calif.) followed with an RBI single through the left side before Wimmer laced an RBI single into center field to put Brown up 4-0.
Harvard's Taylor Cabe took the loss (6-7), conceding two runs on five hits with three strikeouts. Kaitlyn Schiffhauer led the Crimson at the plate, going 3-for-3 with two doubles.
As part of the continued celebration of the new Brown softball field, the Bears welcomed Brown Senior Associate Director of Athletics Carolan Norris, a member of the Brown athletic department since 1983, to throw out the ceremonial first pitch.
Next, Brown closes the regular season with a four-game set against Yale. The Bears play a road doubleheader on Saturday, Apr. 29 and host the Bulldogs for a twin bill on Sunday, Apr. 30 with both game days starting at 12:30 p.m.
