PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown University softball dropped an Ivy League North Division doubleheader to Harvard University, 4-0 and 5-2, on Sunday afternoon at the Brown Softball Field to close out its Alumnae Weekend.
The Bears (13-27, 3-12 Ivy) held the visitors without a run after the second inning in game one and tied game two at 2-2 in the third inning to go with a rally in the sixth before the Crimson (18-16, 9-6 Ivy) emerged with victories in both games.
Junior Annie McGregor (Carlsbad, Calif.) and sophomore Cat Seitz (Poway, Calif.) each drove in a run for the Bears. Junior Katie Orona (Pueblo, Colo.) and sophomore Meghan Wimmer (Boothwyn, Pa.) threw their eighth and seventh complete games of the year respectively.
As part of the continued celebration of the new Brown softball field, the Bears welcomed former All-Ivy shortstop and Ivy League champion Mary Seid '06 to throw out the ceremonial first pitch for game one.
Next, Brown closes the regular season with a four-game set against Yale. The Bears play a road doubleheader on Saturday, Apr. 29 and host the Bulldogs for a twin bill on Sunday, Apr. 30 with both game days starting at 12:30 p.m.
Game 1: Harvard 4, Brown 0
Junior Katie Orona (Pueblo, Colo.) threw her eighth complete game of the season, but Brown fell to Harvard in game one, 4-0.
Neither the Bears nor the Crimson allowed a run after the second inning, but Harvard plated two runs in each of the first two frames to take the win.
Orona tossed 7.0 innings, allowing four runs, all earned, on five hits with three strikeouts in the loss (5-11). At the plate, sophomore Sofia Venegas (La Mirada, Calif.) tallied a triple, and senior Julia Schoenewald (Jamison, Pa.) added a hit.
For Harvard, Taylor Cabe earned the win (6-6) hurling a complete-game shutout, surrendering just two hits and one walk with five strikeouts over 7.0 innings. Olivia Giaquinto led the Crimson at the dish, going 2-for-4 with three RBIs.
The Crimson took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first as Giaquinto hit an RBI single down the left field line prior to an infield single from Nicki Nishizawa that plated a run. Harvard went up 4-0 in the top of the second on a two-run single to right field from Giaquinto.
Game 2: Harvard 5, Brown 2
The Bears knotted the score at 2-2 in the bottom of the third and loaded the bases in the last of the sixth before Harvard held on for the twin bill sweep.
Sophomore Meghan Wimmer (Boothwyn, Pa.) both pitched a complete game – throwing 7.0 innings and permitting five runs, all earned, on eight hits with four strikeouts in the loss (6-10) – and went 2-for-3 at the plate with a double. Freshman Kaitlin Okimoto (Burbank, Calif.) finished 2-for-4 with a run.
Harvard pitcher Kathleen Duncan picked up the win (7-6), registering 4.1 innings pitched in relief without conceding a run on four hits with seven strikeouts. Maddy Kaplan drove in three runs in the top of the sixth while Elizabeth Shively posted a 3-for-4 effort at the plate.
The Crimson opened the game with a 2-0 lead in the top of the second behind RBIs from Kaitlyn Schiffhauer and Rhianna Rich.
Brown responded in the bottom of the third, equalizing at 2-2. With two outs and Okimoto on first, McGregor laced a single up the middle to plate a run. Seitz followed with a double to center field to send home McGregor.
The visitors pulled ahead 5-2 in the top of the sixth as Kaplan sent a three-run, bases-clearing double to center field with two outs.
The Bears threatened in the last of the sixth as Wimmer, senior Julia Schoenewald (Jamison, Pa.), and freshman Sarah Fringer (Macomb Township, Mich.) all singled to load the bases with one out before Duncan escaped the jam.
