Softball Opens Dartmouth Series with Pair of Setbacks

HANOVER, N.H. – Brown University softball fell to Dartmouth College in its first Ivy League North Division doubleheader of the season, 5-1 and 4-3, on Saturday afternoon at Dartmouth Softball Park.

The Bears (11-22, 3-7 Ivy) brought a 3-2 lead into the bottom of the seventh in game two before the host Big Green (8-21-1, 7-3 Ivy) used a two-run home run to walk off with a win and take both of the day's games.

Junior Grayson Metzger (Severna Park, Md.) hit her first home run of the season and the fourth of her career in game one. Sophomore Sofia Venegas (La Mirada, Calif.) tallied three hits on the day.

Next, Brown and Dartmouth tangle in another twin bill tomorrow, Sunday, Apr. 16, starting at 12:30 p.m.

Game 1: Dartmouth 5, Brown 1

Junior Grayson Metzger (Severna Park, Md.) hit a double and a home run, but Brown fell to Dartmouth in game one, 5-1.

The Bears remained within 1-0 of the Big Green heading to the last of the sixth before the hosts plated four runs to pull ahead 5-0 on their way to the victory.

Metzger led the Bears at the plate, posting a 2-for-3 effort with a run and RBI alongside her double and homer. Sophomore Sofia Venegas (La Mirada, Calif.) tallied a hit.

In the circle, junior Katie Orona (Pueblo, Colo.) tossed 5.2 innings, allowing five runs, three earned, on six hits with three strikeouts in the loss (5-9). Freshman Emily Waters (Northridge, Calif.) recorded one out with no hits in relief.

Dartmouth's Breanna Ethridge took the win (6-13), throwing a complete-game 7.0 innings and surrendering one run on three hits with eight strikeouts. Morgan Martinelli drove in two runs for the hosts.

The Big Green went ahead 1-0 in the bottom of the fifth as Calista Almer hit an RBI single to center field to plate an unearned run.

Dartmouth added four runs to its edge in the home half of the sixth beginning with a two-run single from Martinelli to left field. The Big Green brought home another run on a ground out and a final run on an error.

Metzger lifted a solo shot to left field in the top of the seventh for her first homer of the season before Ethridge closed the game.

Game 2: Dartmouth 4, Brown 3

Brown took a 3-2 lead into the bottom of the seventh, but the Big Green's Maddie Damore hit a two-run, walk-off home run to give Dartmouth a 4-3 win.

The Bears plated one run in each of the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings to turn a 1-0 deficit into a 3-2 edge before the host Big Green scored two runs in the final half inning to claim the win.

Sophomore Sofia Venegas (La Mirada, Calif.) went 2-for-4 with a double and a run while senior Julia Schoenewald (Jamison, Pa.) tallied an RBI, a run, and a hit. Senior Christina Andrews (Southlake, Texas) and freshman Raquel Blanchard (Valencia, Calif.) each posted a double.

In the start, sophomore pitcher Meghan Wimmer (Boothwyn, Pa.) hurled 5.0 innings, giving up two runs, both earned, on six hits with one strikeout. Freshman Emily Waters (Northridge, Calif.) pitched 1.1 innings in relief in the loss (1-4).

Dartmouth's Morgan Ebow captured the win (2-7), going 6.0 innings and conceding three runs, two earned on eight hits with one strikeout. Breanna Ethridge threw a scoreless inning of relief.

After Dartmouth went up 1-0 after the bottom of the first, neither team scored until Brown freshman Kaitlin Okimoto (Burbank, Calif.) drove home a run with a single to left field in the top of the fifth, knotting the score at 1-1.

Brown grabbed a 2-1 lead in the top of the sixth as Schoenewald plated a run with an infield single. The Big Green tied it at 2-2 in the last of the sixth as Karen Chaw hit a solo homer to left field.

The Bears regained an advantage at 3-2 as Blanchard pushed home a run with a ground ball before Damore propelled the hosts to the victory with her two-run homer to left field in the bottom of the seventh.
