SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Brown University softball went ahead 2-0 in the top of the fourth and rallied in the top of the seventh, but Iona College took a 4-3 win on day two of the Pirate Invitational at Seton Hall University's Mike Sheppard, Sr. Field on Saturday morning.
In their third game at the tournament, the Bears (1-12) loaded the bases in the top of the seventh and brought home a run with two outs before the Gaels (8-10) ended the threat.
In the circle, senior Leah Nakashima (San Jose, Calif.) threw 4.1 innings, allowing three runs, all earned, on seven hits in the loss (0-1). Junior Katie Orona (Pueblo, Colo.) tossed 1.2 innings in relief, striking out two while giving up one run on three hits.
Jessica Harkness earned the win (1-2) for Iona, hurling a complete-game 7.0 innings and permitting three runs, two earned, on five hits and seven walks with four strikeouts. Marisa Gergel, Kristen Turner, and Dori Tanner all tallied two hits for the Gaels.
The Bears struck first in the game, scoring two runs in the top of the fourth to pull ahead 2-0. After Okimoto doubled to left center to lead off the inning, Seitz sent an RBI double to left center with two outs. Junior Annie McGregor (Carlsbad, Calif.) followed with a single that scored Seitz.
The Gaels tallied four runs in the bottom of the fifth to move ahead 4-2. Danner, Kimmie Chiapparelli, Jasmine Temple, and Hailey Thompson all registered RBIs in the frame.
Brown rallied in the top of the seventh, loading the bases with a pair of walks from senior Sarah Syrop (Kennesaw, Ga.) and junior Grayson Metzger (Severna Park, Md.) and a single from freshman Annie Scarangella (Tucson, Ariz.). Sophomore Sofia Venegas (La Mirada, Calif.) forced home a run with a walk with two outs before the Gaels got out of the jam.
Next, Brown concludes play at the Pirate Invitational tomorrow, Sunday, Mar. 19, with games against Hartford (10 a.m.) and Saint Peter's (2:30 p.m.).
