Andrews Homers, Softball Falls to Albany at Madeira Beach, 13-4

MADEIRA BEACH, Fla. – Senior Christina Andrews hit her first home run of the season, but Brown University softball fell to Albany, 13-4, in five innings on the second day of the Madeira Beach Tournament on Saturday afternoon on Field 3.

The Bears (0-3) held a 2-0 lead after the top of the third due in part to a solo shot from Andrews (Southlake, Texas), but the Great Danes (4-0) struck for eight runs in the bottom of the third and five runs in the last of the fifth to take the run-rule win.

Andrews paced the Bears at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a home run, double, two runs scored, and an RBI. Junior Annie McGregor (Carlsbad, Calif.) went 1-for-2 with a double and run scored while freshmen Sarah Fringer (Macomb Township, Mich.) and Raquel Blanchard (Valencia, Calif.) each drove in one run.

Brown opened the game with a 1-0 lead in the top of the first as Andrews led off with a double to right center. After advancing to third, Andrews scored on a sacrifice fly from Blanchard.

The Bears extended their lead to 2-0 in the top of the third as Andrews led off the inning with a solo homer.

Albany responded in the last of the third with eight runs to pull ahead 8-2. Brown cut the deficit to 8-4 with two runs in the top of the fourth, including an RBI single to left field from Fringer.

The Great Danes closed out the game in the home half of the fifth, pushing five runs across the plate.

For Albany, Aliyah Wade went 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs while Chelsea Henige and Sarah Petzold each drove in three runs.

Devin Durando earned the win (2-0), tossing 4.0 innings and allowing four runs, two earned, on five hits with two strikeouts. Celeste Verdolivo did not give up a hit in one inning of relief.

Freshman pitcher Emily Waters (Northridge, Calif.) took the loss (0-1), permitting eight runs, all earned, on five hits with one strikeout over 2.1 innings.

Next, Brown concludes play at the Madeira Beach Tournament tomorrow, Sunday, Feb. 25, with games against Army West Point (9:00 a.m.) and Georgetown (11:30 a.m.).
