BORDENTOWN, N.J. – Freshman pitcher Katie Orona and senior Jessica Cherness each allowed just one run, but Brown University fell to Princeton University, 1-0 twice, in a doubleheader at Bordentown Regional High School on Saturday afternoon.
The Bears (6-10, 1-3 Ivy) gave up just one earned run over the two contests, but the Tigers (9-13, 2-0 Ivy) plated a run in the bottom of the first in game won and brought home a run in the bottom of the seventh in game two to complete the sweep.
Oronoa (Pueblo, Colo.) struck out four batters and gave up just four hits in a complete game in the opener while Cherness (Torrance, Calif.) did not concede an earned run with five strikeouts in the nightcap.
Next, Brown is scheduled to host Penn on Friday in its home-opening doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.
Game 1 – Princeton 1, Brown 0
Orona (4-3) threw a complete game and allowed just one run on four hits with four strikeouts, but Brown fell to Princeton in game one, 1-0.
Princeton scored the game's only run as Alyssa Schmidt sent a solo home run to center field with two outs in the bottom of the first.
Shanna Christian (2-3) took the win, pitching a complete-game seven innings and striking out eight batters while giving up four hits.
The Bears almost rallied for a run in the top of the second as sophomore Sarah Syrop (Kennesaw, Ga.) walked with one out before McGregor sent a single to right field to move Sryop to third with two outs, but the Tigers got out of the jam.
Brown again threatened in the top of the fifth as McGregor singled to lead off the inning. Sophomore Julia Schoenewald (Jamison, Pa.) moved her to second with a sacrifice bunt, and McGregor reached as far as third before Princeton retired the side.
In the top of the seventh, senior Trista Chavez (San Pedro, Calif.) set the table with a leadoff walk prior to a sacrifice from McGregor. Leung pushed Chavez to third with a single to right prior to the Tigers recording the final out.
Game 2 – Princeton 1, Brown 0
Cherness (2-3) allowed just one unearned run over 6.1 innings with five strikeouts, but Princeton scored a run in the bottom of the seventh to take a 1-0 win in game two.
Hayley Hineman brought home the game-winning run with a bunt single, driving in Kylee Pierce, who led off the inning with a single, from third.
For Princeton, Meredith Brown (2-1) earned the win, tossing six innings in relief and allowing six hits in the combined shutout. Ashley Laguardia gave up one hit in the first inning.
The Bears posted their first threat in the top of the first as Leung led off the inning with a single to center field, and Hanna followed with a walk. Leung made it to third before Hineman got out of the inning.
Brown again moved a runner to third in the top of the second as McGregor and Schoenewald each singled with one out. McGregor made it to third on a ground out from freshman Grayson Metzger (Severna Park, Md.).
In the top of the seventh, Metzger started a two-out rally with a single up the middle. She then stole second before Leung moved her to third with an infield single prior to Princeton charting the inning's last out.
