PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Brown softball team dropped both ends of an Ivy League doubleheader at Penn, falling to the Quakers 8-0 in five innings in game one and 5-3 in the nightcap at Penn Park on Wednesday.
For Brown (2-22, 0-8 Ivy League), sophomore Janet Leung (Mississauga, Ontario) had a hit in each game including a double in game two, while freshman Lauren Hanna (Milford, Mass.) batted 2-for-3 and scored a run in the nightcap. Junior Jessica Cherness (Torrance, Calif.) took the loss in 4.0 innings of work in the opener and freshman Gina Chieffallo (Eynon, Pa.) battled for 3.0 innings in the second game while saddling the setback.
In game one, Penn scored two runs in each of the first two innings, posted a three-spot in the fourth and added another in the fifth to win 8-0 in five innings. Kanani Datan finished the game 3-for-3 with two runs and two RBI while Elysse Gorney went 2-for-3, slugged a double and drove in four runs. Alexis Borden went 5.0 shutout innings, allowing two hits while striking out eight.
Gorney's single to center scored the game's first run and Alexis Sargent rolled an RBI groundout to give the Quakers a 2-0 lead after one. Datan's two-run single in the second made it 4-0, and Penn pushed across three runs on two hits and an error in the fourth to go up 7-0. Gorney's bases-clearing two-bagger with one away was the big blow in the inning and Kayla Dahlerbruch ended the game with an RBI single to center in the bottom of the fifth.
Game two saw Penn go up 5-0 through four innings, but the Bears rallied with a pair of runs in the fifth and another in the seventh, falling just short of a comeback in the 5-3 loss.
An error on the infield with one out scored Penn's first run and gave way to a two-run double by Allen, giving the Quakers an early 3-0 lead. Freshman Julia Schoenewald (Jamison, Pa.) got things rolling with a one-out single in the third and Hanna placed a bunt single to put runners on first and second, but two groundouts ended the threat.
Penn tacked on single runs in the third and fourth on Dahlerbruch's RBI base hit and Datan's one-run single, stretching the hosts' lead to 5-0. Freshman Christina Andrews (Southlake, Texas) got Brown on the board in the top of the fifth, lacing a single to right that scored a pair. Freshman pitcher Leah Nakashima (San Jose, Calif.) shut Penn down in the fifth and sixth to keep the game 5-2, giving the Bears a chance to rally in the seventh. Hanna poked a one-out single to left and Leung roped a double to left, moving Hanna to third. A passed ball scored Hanna, making it a two-run game, but Penn pitcher Alexis Sargent hunkered down and worked around a two-out walk to retire the side on an infield popup.
Brown returns to action this weekend with a four-game set at Harvard. The first pitch of Saturday's doubleheader is scheduled for 12:30 p.m.
