PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Junior Trista Chavez (San Pedro, Calif.) and freshman Christina Andrews (Southlake, Texas) each ripped three hits for the Bears but the Cornell bats slugged eight extra base hits as the Brown softball team fell to the Big Red, 8-3 and 7-1, in an Ivy League double header at the Brown softball field on Saturday.
For Brown (2-17, 0-4 Ivy League), Chavez went 3-5 on the day with a double, two RBI and walk, while Andrews finished the first game 3-for-3 with two runs and a free pass. Sophomores Janet Leung (Mississauga, Ontario) and Molly Ann Mecca (Jessup, Pa.) and freshman Casey Fisher (Oro Valley, Ariz.) poked a single in each contest.
Junior Jessica Cherness (Torrance, Calif.) suffered the loss in game one, tossing 3.1 innings and allowing seven hits, while Andrews took the setback in the nightcap over 3.0 frames. Freshman Leah Nakashima (San Jose, Calif.) threw a combined 5.2 innings of relief, including 3.2 shutout stanzas in the opener before getting tagged for six hits over 2.0 innings in game two. Freshman Gina Chieffallo (Eynon, Pa.) made her first appearance since March 15 and allowed no runs over a pair of innings.
The Big Red took an early 2-0 lead on a first-inning two-run home run by Meg Parker and never surrendered, putting up two more in the third and a four-spot in the fourth. Three Cornell batters finished with two hits, highlighted by three-RBI performances by Parker and Jessica Bigbie. Parker also dealt 6.0 innings and struck out seven to secure the victory. Cornell plated a pair in the fourth on Christina Villalon's one-out single up the middle, and four more came across in the fourth when Parker knocked an RBI base hit and Bigbie followed with a bases-clearing double to the fence.
Brown tacked on its first run on an RBI double by Chavez to left center, scoring Andrews who had hooked a one-out single through the left side. The Bears looked to rally in the sixth and loaded the bases with no outs on an Andrews walk and back-to-back singles by Williams and Chavez. Mecca laced a one-out RBI single to left and junior Sam Brady (Vienna, Va.) lifted a sacrifice fly to center to make it 8-3, but a groundout retired the side. Leung and Andrews stoked the fire again in the seventh with consecutive one-out base hits and Chavez drew a two-out walk to load the bases, but Sammy Roth stranded the runners and posted the strikeout to end the game.
Cornell jumped ahead in the first inning of game two on a leadoff triple by Michiko McGivney who then scored on a wild pitch. McGivney doubled the lead with a solo shot in the third to start off a two-run innings, while the Big Red tacked on four in the fifth for a 7-1 lead. Starting pitcher Alyson Onyon went the distance, giving up a run on four hits with eight strikeouts.
The Bears answered Cornell's two-run third with an RBI single to center by Chavez, scoring Fisher who had ripped a leadoff single and moved to second on a bunt. That proved to be Brown's last hit of the day, however, and the Big Red added four runs worth of insurance in the fifth of five hits. Three singles juices the bases with one down and Jenny Edwards smacked a double to right center to push across two runs. A well-timed squeeze play brought home another and a two-out RBI single scored Cornell's seventh run.
Chieffallo silenced the Big Red bats over the last two frames, allowing just two hits, but the final nine Brown batters went down in order to complete the Cornell sweep.
The Bears return to action tomorrow for another Ivy League doubleheader, taking on Princeton at 12:30 p.m.
