LAST TIME OUT
Despite a gutsy pitching performance by junior Jessica Cherness (Torrance, Calif.) in the opener, the Brown softball team dropped both ends of its Ivy League opening doubleheader at Columbia, 3-1 and 3-0, last Friday.
Cherness tossed 6.0 innings for Brown (2-15) and tied her season-high with eight strikeouts in game one. Sophomore Janet Leung (Mississauga, Ontario) batted 2-for-3 with a double in the opener and freshman Christina Andrews (Southlake, Texas) added an RBI two-bagger, while freshman Casey Fisher (Oro Valley, Az.), senior Kelsey Williams (Greenwood, Ind.) and senior Jen Kries (Mission Viejo, Calif.) each singled in the nightcap.
SCOUTING THE BULLDOGS
The Bulldogs (12-12) enter today's Northeast Conference doubleheader against Fairleigh Dickinson after winning four of their last five games, including a two-game sweep of UMass Lowell on Tuesday.
Bryant is hitting .278 as a team with a whopping 19 home runs, led by senior Kendall Corder (.362 average, .443 on base percentage) and sophomore Elle Madsen (.314 average, eight home runs, 18 RBI), who ranks 20th in the country in homers per game. Madsen paces the Bulldogs on the mound as well with a 3.24 earned run average over 95.0 innings with 61 strikeouts and 13 complete games.
Brown continues Ivy League play this weekend when the Bears host Cornell on Saturday and Princeton on Sunday. Both doubleheaders start at 12:30 p.m.
