PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND – The Brown softball team (10-28, 4-16 Ivy League) concluded its 2013 season on Saturday afternoon on the softball field in the Erickson Athletic Complex with a doubleheader against Yale (10-36, 5-15 Ivy League). The Bears earned a hard-fought, 9-8 win over the Bulldogs in the first contest before falling 12-2 in the second.
Playing in front of a home crowd, Brown took an early lead in the first game of the afternoon, knocking in one run in the first inning and three in the second. At the top of the order, freshman Janet Leung (Mississauga, Ontario) led things off with a single up the middle and then advanced on a sacrifice bunt by senior co-captain Avery Silverstein (Woodbridge, CT) and a single by senior co-captain Stephanie Thompson (Woodbridge, CT) before sophomore Trista Chavez (San Pedro, CA) brought her home.
After holding the Bulldogs scoreless in the top of the inning, the Bears added three more runs to their total. With the bases loaded and one out, Silverstein hit a sacrifice fly to center field, driving in junior Kristin Watterlond (East Granby, CT) on the play. Two batters later, with the bases still loaded, Chavez sent the ball into center field, bringing in both Leung and junior Kelsey Williams (Greenwood, IN) and giving Brown a 4-0 lead.
Yale grabbed two runs in the top of the third on a homerun by Christy Nelson, but Brown responded in the bottom of the inning when Leung singled up the middle, allowing junior Jen Kries (Mission Viejo, CA) to score.
The Bulldogs mounted a vicious comeback attempt in the fourth, scoring four runs on two singles and a homerun to take a 6-5 lead. The Bears rallied right back however, as Thompson, leading off the order in the bottom of the inning, knocked one out of the park to knot the score 6-6.
Freshman Sarah Ropiak (Acton, MA), pitching in relief, held Yale scoreless in the fifth, allowing Brown to regain its control of the game. A single by Thompson brought Williams home, and then Chavez added the Bears' second homerun of the game to bring in two more runs and give them a 9-6 lead.
A homerun by Sarah Onorato in the sixth brought the Bulldogs within one, but it wasn't enough, as the Bears secured the win with a scoreless top of the seventh.
Thompson was stellar at the plate in the first game, hitting 3-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs. Leung and Chavez were equally strong, going 2-for-2 and 2-for-3, respectively. Leung had two runs and an RBI, while Chavez had a run and five RBIs.
Senior Lauren Kattchee (Houston, TX) started her final game as a Bear, pitching 3.2 innings during which she allowed eight hits and five runs. Ropiak earned the win, lifting her record to 5-13 and giving up six hits and three runs while striking out two batters.
An explosion of homeruns in the second game of the day lifted Yale to a 12-2 win in both teams' final games of the 2013 season. The Bulldogs knocked two out of the park in the first, as both Tori Balta and Hannah Brennan connected to give the visitors a 2-0 lead.
A scoreless second was followed by a Brown rally in the third, as senior Aly Caplan (San Mateo, CA) led of the inning with a single. Watterlond came in to pinch run, racing to home when Thompson singled and bringing the Bears within one.
Yale opened things up in the fourth however, scoring five runs on a wild pitch and two-run homeruns by Onorato and Nelson, as each player notched her second homerun of the day.
Thompson led off the bottom of the fifth with her second homerun of the day, but the Bulldogs couldn't be stopped, grabbing another two runs in the top of the sixth when Onorato knocked one out of the park for the third time in the afternoon's contests. The visitors added three more in the top of the seventh to secure a 12-2 win over the home team.
Leung was 3-for-4 at the plate in the day's second game, while Thompson was 2-for-4 with a run and two RBIs in her final collegiate game. Chavez and Caplan were also strong, going 2-for-3.
Sophomore Jessica Cherness (Torrance, CA) received the loss, pitching 3.2 innings and allowing six hits and seven runs. Classmate Sam Brady (Vienna, VA) pitched 3.1 innings in relief, giving up five hits and five runs.
The Brown softball team honored the careers of the four members of the class of 2013 both before and after the doubleheader, recognizing the dedication and accomplishments of Aly Caplan, Lauren Kattchee, Avery Silverstein and Stephanie Thompson.
