Softball Drops Pair to Harvard

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown softball team (7-24, 1-13) dropped a pair of home games to Harvard (20-17, 10-4) on Saturday afternoon at the Brown softball field to kick off a four-game series. The Bears were defeated, 4-0, in the opening contest before falling, 3-1, in the second game.

Morgan Groom earned the win for the Crimson in the opener as she allowed just one hit in a complete game effort, while Sarah Ropiak (Acton, Mass.) allowed four runs in seven innings to pick up the loss.

Harvard jumped out to an early lead as Kasey Lange hit an RBI double to left field in the first inning for the 1-0 advantage. The Crimson padded their lead with two runs on three hits in the top of the third when Lange hit a two-run homer to push the visitors on top, 3-0.

After Harvard added another run in the fourth, the Bears made some noise in the bottom of the seventh when Jamie Pospishil (Wayne, N.J.) dropped in a two-out single with two runners on, but Kelsey Williams (Greenwood, Ind.) was thrown out at the plate to end the contest.

Danielle Palms (Smithfield, R.I.) led the Bears with a pair of hits in the second game, while Jessica Cherness (Torrance, Calif.) allowed just three runs on the mound but was handed the loss. Jamie Halula earned the win for the Crimson after allowing one run and three hits.

Once again, Harvard jumped on the board first with a run in the opening frame as Lange hit a sacrifice fly to right field for the one-run advantage.

Brown struck back in the bottom of the third when Trista Chavez (San Pedro, Calif.) crushed a solo homer to even the score at 1-1.

After three scoreless innings, the Crimson tacked on two runs in the top of the seventh as Shelbi Olson hit an RBI double and later scored on a wild pitch to give the visitors the 3-1 lead and eventual victory.

The Bears return to action on Sunday, April 21 when they face Harvard in a doubleheader at 12:30 p.m.
