HANOVER, NEW HAMPSHIRE – The Brown softball team (7-22, 1-11 Ivy League) suffered two more losses to Dartmouth (18-17, 8-4 Ivy League) this afternoon, dropping both decisions at the Dartmouth Softball Park. The Bears lost by a score of 5-0 in their first game with the Big Green before falling 9-1 in a six inning game.
The Bears started off strong at the beginning of the first game, as both freshman Janet Leung (Mississauga, Ontario) and senior co-captain Stephanie Thompson (Chino, CA) registered hits against the Big Green's Kristen Rumley. Brown left the inning scoreless however, and Dartmouth responded with two runs to take the early lead.
After a scoreless second, the Big Green built on their lead in the third when Rumley led off with a double and was driven home by a Katie McEachern ground out. As Brown struggled offensively, Dartmouth continued to forge ahead, scoring twice on an Alex St. Romain home run in the bottom of the sixth to claim the 5-0 win.
The top of the order for Brown accounted for the entirety of its offensive production, as Leung, sophomore Trista Chavez (San Pedro, CA) and Thompson each had a hit. Sophomore Jessica Cherness (Torrance, CA) received the loss for the Bears, giving up six hits and five runs in six innings while striking out two batters.
Brown came out fighting in the second game of the day, grabbing a lead in the top of the first on a home run by Chavez. Dartmouth responded quickly however, tying the game in the bottom of the inning when Rumley scored on a single by Miller.
The Big Green surged ahead in the third, scoring three runs on four hits in spite of significant defensive efforts from the Bears. The third and fourth were quiet innings, but Dartmouth scored twice in the fifth and three times in the sixth to finalized the 9-1 victory.
Freshman Sarah Ropiak (Acton, MA) pitched four innings for Brown, allowing nine hits and six runs in the loss. Senior Lauren Kattchee (Houston, TX) relieved Ropiak in the fifth, giving up five hits and three runs.
Brown will return to College Hill next weekend for two Ivy League doubleheaders on the Softball Field in the Erickson Athletic Complex. The Bears will take on the Harvard Crimson, with action scheduled to begin at 12:30pm on Saturday, April 20th and Sunday, April 21st.
