PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND – The Brown softball team (7-18, 1-7 Ivy League) took to the Softball Field at the Erickson Athletic Complex this afternoon for two non-league games and fell twice to the University of Rhode Island (9-19, 2-5 A-10). The Bears brought the Rams to eight innings in the first contest of the day before falling, 2-0, and were defeated by the visitors, 4-0, in the second game.
The first game of the afternoon was a battle of the pitchers, with both Brown's Sarah Ropiak (Acton, MA) and Rhode Island's Erika Szymanski pitching scoreless games through seven innings. Both teams generated scoring opportunities however, with the Bears' best chance coming in the bottom of the third. Freshman Janet Leung (Mississauga, Ontario) led off the inning with a double to right center and was able to reach third on a ground out. Junior Danielle Palms (Smithfield, RI) stole second after walking to first, but the final out of the inning halted the surge and left the game scoreless.
It only took one extra inning to determine a winner in the contest, as the Rams found a way by the Bears' freshman pitcher, bringing in two runs to take the 2-0 victory. Per extra inning rules, URI began the inning with Emily Hendricks on second base, and a sacrifice bunt by Courtney Prendergast allowed her to advance to third. Kelly Coker followed that up with a single, driving Hendricks in to score the winning run, and then advanced to second with crafty base running. The Rams scored their second and last run of the game when Jocelyn Mattison hit a double to right center, allowing Coker to cross the plate.
Ropiak pitched the complete game for the Bears, allowing two runs and 10 hits while striking out five batters. The freshman now has an overall record of 4-7 in her 11 starts.
After two scoreless innings to start the second game, URI exploded for four runs in the top of the third to take the lead over Brown. Prendergast started things off with a single to left center and Coker followed that with a single up the middle. With two runners on, Lauren Klepchick knocked a double into right field to bring Prendergast in for the go-ahead run. The Rams didn't stop there, as Mattison singled to bring in two more runs before Taylor Archer bunted to bring her in and give the visitors a 4-0 lead over the home team.
The score would remain stagnant for the rest of the game, with neither team able to generate an offensive surge, and the Rams would walk away with their second win of the afternoon.
Sophomore Jessica Cherness (Torrance, CA) received the loss for the Bears, allowing four runs and seven hits in seven innings pitched.
Brown resumes Ivy League play this weekend, as the team travels to Hanover, New Hampshire for four games against the Dartmouth Big Green. The Bears play a doubleheader on Saturday and Sunday, with first pitch scheduled for 12:30pm on both days.
