Brown Falls Twice to Penn

PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND – The Brown softball team (7-16, 1-7 Ivy League) completed its first home weekend on Saturday, dropping two games to the Penn Quakers (18-13, 7-1 Ivy League) on a sunny but chilly day on the Softball Field.

Penn took an early lead on an unearned run in the first when Georgia Guttadauro struck out but reached first on a passed ball. The full bases forced Elysse Gorney home where she just beat out Brown's freshman catcher Alex Scott (Santa Cruz, CA) to give the Quakers a 1-0 lead.

The 1-0 score held until the top of the fifth, when the visitors drove in four more runs to stretch their lead over the home team. Kanani Datan scored first for the Quakers, reaching when Samantha Erosa flied out to right field. Brooke Coloma followed that up with a single to right field that brought in Gorney, and both Kayla Dahlerbruch and Coloma scored when Guttadauro singled to the same spot.

Brown got one back in the bottom of the fifth on the impressive base-running skills of co-captain Avery Silverstein (Woodbridge, CT). The senior got on base after she singled to shortstop, and then advanced to second on a ground out by classmate and co-captain Stephanie Thompson (Chino, CA). She made her way to third on a passed ball and ultimately scored on a wild pitch.

Penn cemented their win in next inning however, as both Gorney and Sydney Turchin crossed the plate to help the Quakers earn the 7-1 victory over the Bears.

Sophomore Jessica Cherness (Torrance, CA) received the loss in the first game, moving her season record to 3-7. In 4.2 innings pitched she allowed nine hits and five runs. Senior Lauren Kattchee (Houston, TX) also made an appearance, allowing four hits in 2.1 innings of relief.

The two teams battled back and forth in the second game of the day, with Brown taking an early 1-0 lead when sophomore Trista Chavez (San Pedro, CA) homered in the bottom of the first. Penn pushed right back however, scoring five consecutive runs in the second to take a commanding 5-1 lead.

Freshman pitcher Sarah Ropiak (Acton, MA) regrouped however, holding the Quakers scoreless for the next four innings and allowing the Bears to make it a one-run game with an inning left.

Brown earned one in the bottom of the second when Silverstein singled up the middle to drive junior Kelsey Williams (Greenwood, IN) across the plate. Them, after two scoreless innings for the Bears, Ropiak launched a triple to center field to bring in both junior Kristin Watterlond (East Granby, CT) and freshman Janet Leung (Mississauga, Ontario).

The Bears were unable to come any closer however, as the Quakers would add one more run in the seventh to grab their second win of the day, a 6-4 victory.

Chavez was impressive at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI. Both sophomore Kelsey Hom (Santa Monica, CA) and Leung were 2-for-4. Ropiak received the loss, pitching the complete game for the Bears.

Brown plays at home again on Tuesday, April 9, as the team welcomes the URI Rams to the Softball Field at the Erickson Athletic Complex for a doubleheader. The first game will begin at 2:00pm.
