SMITHFIELD, RHODE ISLAND – The Brown softball team (6-13, 0-4 Ivy League) suffered a midweek slump this afternoon, falling to Bryant (10-14, 3-5 Northeast Conference), 10-1, in five innings at the Bulldogs' Softball Complex at Conaty Park.
The home team worked its way onto the scoreboard at the bottom of the first, as both Aubrey Mable and Kristen Carter crossed the plate after Madeline Velasquez powered a double to left center. The Bulldogs would go on to score two runs in each of the next two innings, opening up a 6-0 lead over the Bears as the teams headed into the fourth inning of play.
The Bears got one back at the top of the fourth, as two walks and a sacrifice hit by freshman Sarah Ropiak (Acton, MA) sent junior Danielle Palms (Smithfield, RI) to third. Junior Jen Kries (Mission Viejo, CA) followed that up with a single to center field, driving Palms home and narrowing Bryant's lead to five.
Not to be outdone, the Bulldogs responded in the fourth, tallying four runs on two consecutive homeruns by Christina Eringis and Jessica Benacquista. The Bears were unable to generate any more offense in the top of the fifth, allowing the home team to hold on to a 10-1 victory.
Sophomore Sam Brady (Vienna, VA) received the loss for Brown, allowing four runs and six hits in 1.1 innings pitched. Ropiak and sophomore Jessica Cherness (Torrance, CA) both saw time on the mound in relief.
The Bears will return to Ivy League play tomorrow afternoon when they welcome the Columbia Lions to the softball field at the Erickson Athletic Complex. Brown's home opener, a doubleheader, will begin at 2:00pm.
