TOWSON, MD - The Brown softball team (1-5) picked up its first win of the season this afternoon, earning a 2-1 victory over Towson (8-10-1) in the first game of the Towson Classic.
"That was a quality win versus a quality opponent," said first year head coach Katie Flynn. "Sarah had the hitters off balance all day. They went up a run and Trista brought us right back with a line drive blast to left center. She also got.the RBI with a walk and the bases loaded for the go ahead."
Towson scored the first run of the game in the top of the second inning on an RBI single from Courtney Johnson. The Bears immediately responded, however, as sophomore Trista Chavez (San Pedro, CA) hit a solo homerun in the bottom of the second to even the score. Chavez's homerun marked Brown's first of the season.
Brown took the lead in the fourth inning, led by freshman Janet Leung's (Mississauga, Ontario) single to center field. Senior co-captain Stephanie Thompson (Chino, CA) singled to left field and sophomore Kelsey Hom (Santa Monica, CA) walked to load the bases. Chavez followed, also earning a walk, which allowed Leung to score and give the Bears a 2-1 lead.
Freshman Sarah Ropiak (Acton, MA) braved the cold weather conditions to earn her first win for Brown, pitching seven complete innings and allowing jusr one run. During Ropiak's stellar outing, she gave up only four hits and one walk, while striking out four batters.
Chavez also had an outstanding game, going 1-for-2 with a homerun and a walk, and was directly involved with both runs that Brown scored. Thompson, who went 2-for-3 with two singles, and Leung, who singled and scored the game-winning run, both played important roles in the Bears' victory over the TIgers.
Brown will play two games on the second day of the Towson Classic, facing the host school again tomorrow morning at 10:30 am, before taking on Lafayette at 12:45 pm.
