Providence, RI- The Brown University women's softball team earned two victories over Dartmouth College this afternoon to improve to 8-20 overall and 5-7 in the Ivy League. Both games were decided in the final inning, with Brown having two consecutive walk-off hits to defeat the Big Green. The first game it was junior Alyssa Caplan's (San Mateo, CA) double that lifted Brown to a 5-4 victory, and in game two it was junior Stephanie Thompson's (Chino, CA)single to capture a 4-3 win.
Leading the offense this afternoon was senior Kate Strobel, who batted .857 going 6-for-7 at the plate, including two doubles and a homerun, four runs scored and three RBI. Freshman Misa Wong (San Jose, CA) went 2-for-2 with one RBI and sophomore Jen Kries (Mission Viejo, CA) went 2-for-3 with one run scored.
Caplan hit a walk-off double to left field in the bottom of the seventh inning to bring home Thompson (Chino, CA), which lifted the Bears to a 5-4 victory over Dartmouth. The Bears recovered from a three-run deficit heading into the final frame by scoring four runs and recording the win.
Strobel led off the Bears in the bottom of the first with a solo homerun over the left field fence giving Bruno a 1-0 lead over the Big Green.
The Big Green came back to take a 2-1 lead when Kat Hicks homered to center field in the second inning and Noelle Ramirez hit a homered in the third.
Dartmouth's Kristen Rumley hit a triple to center field to bring in two more runs for Big Green in the top of the sixth inning to take a three-run lead.
In the bottom of the seventh, Strobel hit a double to right center field to bring in Kries to cut the deficit to two. Freshman pinch hitter Wong sent a double down the right field line to bring in Strobel to come within one of the Big Green.
Dartmouth then intentionally walked Thompson, the nation's leader in batting average, to get to sophomore Danielle Palms (Smithfield, RI). Palms hit a grounder to Dartmouth's Kara Curosh, who threw the ball over Kat Hicks' head at first to score junior Avery Silverstein (Woodbridge, CT) to even the score, 4-4. Then, Caplan blasted a double to left field to bring in Thompson and win the game, 5-4.
Freshman Jessica Cherness (Torranca, CA) received the win for the Bears to improve to 6-8 overall. She pitched 2/3 of an inning and struck out one batter. Kat Hicks was handed the loss for the Big Green. She gave up three runs on three hits and walked one.
Strobel led the offense going 3-for-3 with two RBI and two run scored, while Caplan went 2-for-4 with one RBI.
The Bears rallied again in game two and won again in the bottom of the seventh inning. This time it was a single by Thompson to bring home Strobel to earn a 4-3 victory over the Big Green.
The Bears jumped out to a 3-0 lead over the Big Green after scoring two runs in the first and one in the second. Dartmouth cut its deficit to two by scoring in the top of the third when Hillary Barker hit an RBI double to center field.
Curosh tied the score in the top of the fifth with a two-run homer to left field, but the Bears' were able to come up with the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Dartmouth's Hillary Barker earned the loss on the pitching mound after giving up four runs on 11 hits, and Denise van der Goot (2-7) received the win for the Bears.
Strobel went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI to lead the offense, and Silverstein went 2-for-4 with one run scored. Thompson also went 2-for-4 with one RBI.
Brown is back in action on April 21st and April 22nd in doubleheaders at Harvard.
