Providence, RI- The Brown University softball team will begin its Ivy League schedule when it takes on the University of Pennsylvania Quakers (15-10) at 2 p.m. on Friday, March 30, followed by a 12:30 game at Columbia (6-15) on Saturday, March 31. Both games are doubleheaders.
The Bears head into the weekend 3-11 overall, and are currently being led by junior Stephanie Thompson. Thompson, this week's Ivy League Player of the Week, is coming off a weekend where she batted .667 with 12 hits in 18 at-bats, and is carrying a five-game hitting streak. Thompson boasts a .477 batting average and leads the Bears in runs (10), hits (21), doubles (4), homeruns (3) and RBI (12).
Newcomer Trista Chavez has also been a solid force for the Bears at the plate as she currently ranks second on the team in batting average (.308). She has combined for 12 hits, four doubles and one RBI.
Freshman Jessica Cherness owns a 3-4 record on the pitcher's mound. She's pitched 39 innings and has given up 37 runs on 67 hits.
The Bears will head back to Rhode Island to host Cornell (April 6) and Princeton (April 7) in their home opener. Friday's doubleheader vs. the Big Red willbegin at 2 p.m., while Saturday's doubleheader against the Tigers will begin at 12:30 p.m.
