Bears Fall to Santa Clara, 6-4

Riverside, CA- The Brown University softball team (3-9) dropped a 6-4 decision to Santa Clara (5-22) on Saturday afternoon at Amy S. Harrison Field.

Junior Stephanie Thompson led the Brown offense going 3-for-4 at the plate with three RBI, and Kelsey Williams went 2-for-4 with one run scored. The Bears out-hit the Broncos today, 12-6.

Santa Clara earned its first run of the game in the top of the second inning when Briana Knight tripled to right field to bring home Breezy Bernard who got on base from a double. With one out, Jaymi Bautista-Geiger put down a sacrifice bunt to cross Knight to take a 2-0 lead over the Bears.

The Broncos extended their lead to 4-0 by tacking on two more runs in the top of the third. Jamie Wallis doubled to right center to bring home Alyssa Jepsen and Bernard hit a sacrifice fly to center field to bring home Wallis.

The Bears cut their deficit to two in the bottom of the frame when Ayssa Caplan's single to the pitcher brought home Kelsey Williams. Stephanie Thompson scored the next run by driving a single to right center to bring in Kelsey Home.

Santa Clara made the score 5-2 in the top of the fourth when an error on a sacrifice bunt scored Kristin Welsh. The Bears were able to come within one in the sixth when Thompson's double to right center crossed both Misa Wong and Palms. But the Broncos tallied a run in the seventh and held Brown scoreless in the seventh to earn the 6-4 victory.

Santa Clara's B Rios (2-5) earned the win on the mound pitching three innings for the Broncos. She gave up just two runs on five hits and struck out one batter. Sam Brady (0-4) was handed the loss giving up four runs on four hits pitching 2.1 innings.

The Bears will now take on Colorado State at 2 p.m. (PT).

Due to inclement weather expected in Riverside tomorrow, the Brown vs. Colorado State game has been moved to 11 a.m.
