Providence, RI- The Brown University softball team and lone senior Kristie Chin ended the 2011 season with two victories over Yale University this afternoon at the Erickson Athletic Complex. The Bears defeated the Bulldogs 2-0 in game one, and followed it up with a 5-4 win in game two to finish the year 14-22-1 and 8-12 in the Ivy League. The losses for Yale moved the Bulldogs to 17-25 overall and an 8-12 mark in the league as well.
Junior Kate Strobel led the offense today going 4-for-5 at the plate (.800) with one run scored and one RBI. Also pitching in was freshman Jen Kries with a 3-for-4 (.750) performance with one RBI and sophomore Stephanie Thompson went 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored. Chin ended her career on a high note picking up two victories on the mound. In 14 innings of work she allowed just four runs (two earned) on 12 hits, walked eight and struck out two batters. She has ended her year 12-13 with a 4.34 ERA, pitching 172.2 innings.
Brown picked up a run in the bottom of the first inning when Strobel singled to right field to score Kelsey Williams, who got on base previously from a walk. The Bears increased their lead to 2-0 in the second when Lauren Katchee grounded out to Yale's shortstop to bring home Chin, who had doubled to center field.
Chin pitched all seven innings for the Bears and allowed the Bulldogs to just four hits, while striking out two and walking four to improve to 11-13 on the year. Yale freshman Chelsey Dunham was handed the loss to move to 11-3. Dunham gave up two runs on seven hits, walked four and struck out three.
The Bears kept the offense rolling and scored runs in the first through fourth inning. But Yale kept the game close, including runs scored in the sixth and seventh to come within one, but Brown was able to come away with the 5-4 win to end the season.
In the first inning, Thompson singled up the middle and later on scored on a wild pitch to give Bruno a 1-0 edge over Yale. But the Bulldogs came up with two runs in the top of the second when Westman crossed home when Brown got the runner out at second base. Then, Tori Balta scored the next run of the inning on a passed ball to give the Bulldogs their first lead of the day, 2-1.
With two outs in the second inning, Kries knocked a single up the middle to bring home Chin, who reached first after being hit by a pitch, to even the score 2-2.
In the third inning, Brown's Trish Melvin came up with a big double to left center to bring home Strobel, who singled to center field to lead off the inning to regain a lead, 3-2. The Bears continued to roll in the fourth when Strobel reached first on an error by Yale's center fielder to advance to second, scoring both Thompson and Silverstein to extend Brown's lead to 5-2.
Yale made a comeback by scoring a run in the sixth with a Virginia Waldrop single to left field brought home Johnson, and Katie Yanagisawa scored unearned in the seventh after a Brown error to come within one. The Bulldogs had two runners on base, but a grounder to Chin ended the game in Bruno's favor, 5-4.
