Baltimore, MD- The Brown University softball team picked up two wins during the final day of the UMBC Dawg Pound Invitational when it defeated Niagara, 4-1, and Coppin State, 9-3. Sophomore third baseman Stephanie Thompson went 7-for-8 this afternoon, which included five runs scored, a double, three homeruns and seven RBI.
In game one against the Purple Eagles, the Bears scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the first inning when Thompson doubled to left field to bring home second baseman Jen Kries. But Niagara quickly evened the score in the top of the second inning after Kayla Hines hit a solo homerun over the left field fence.
With two outs in the bottom of the third, the Bears answered right back when Thompson homered to left field to gain a 2-1 edge heading into the final four innings of the game. Senior pitcher Kristie Chin shut down the rest of the Niagara batters and kept the Purple Eagles scoreless, as Bruno went on to tally two runs in the fifth to eventually earn a 4-1 win.
The Bears rallied again in the bottom of the fifth when Thompson stepped up to the plate and blasted a homerun over the left field fence to notch Brown's third and fourth runs of the game.
Chin earned the win at the mound pitching all seven innings allowing just eight hits, one run and striking out five Niagara batters. Thompson led the offense going 3-for-3 with two runs scored, two homers and four RBI, while Kries went 1-for-2 with one run scored.
The Bears continued their hot hitting in game two versus Coppin State, as the squad jumped out to a 4-0 lead after the first inning, and went on to tally runs in both the second and third to gain a 6-0 lead after just three innings.
Lead-off hitter Kries began the first inning with a single to left field, and went on to steal second base. Kristen Watterlond earned a walk and Thompson put down a bunt to load the bases. Sophomore Alyssa Caplan grounded out to second base to score Kries, and a single up the middle by Kate Strobel brought home both Thompson and Watterlond. Next, Palms crossed first on a fielder's choice, and a single by Trish Melvin scored Palms to bring in the Bears' fourth run of the inning.
Strobel's single to center field in the second inning scored Thompson, and two errors by Coppin State in the third inning put both Avery Silverstein and Kries on base. With two outs, Thompson singled to left field to score Kries, and give Brown a 6-0 lead.
Coppin State lit up the scoreboard in the fourth inning when Carmen Frazier homered to center field, but Bruno would answer right back when Thompson blasted her fourth homerun of the day to score Watterlond and take an 8-1 lead.
Coppin State went on to score runs in both the fifth and sixth innings, but the Bears sealed up the victory by adding another run in the seventh to win, 9-3.
The Bears combined for 20 hits as a team, as Thompson led the offense again with a 4-for-5 performance at the plate with three RBI and three runs scored. Strobel went 4-for-5 with three RBI, and Kries was 3-for-5 with one run scored.
Junior pitcher Trish Melvin earned the win the mound pitching 4.2 innings and allowing just four hits and two runs (one earned), while striking out four batters. Freshman Maegan Sloggett relieved Melvin and pitched 2.1 innings for the Bears. She gave up three hits, one run and struck out three.
The Bears will head back down to UMBC next weekend for the UMBC Spring Classic on March 19-20. Brown will challenge St. Francis and Niagara on March 19, and then Morgan State and UMBC on the 20th.
