Providence, RI- The Brown University softball team (17-19, 4-10 Ivy) cruised to a 9-1 five inning victory over Bryant (7-34, 4-12 NEC) this afternoon at the Erickson Athletic Complex. Freshman Stephanie Thompson (Chino, CA) led the Bears at the plate today, going 3-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored while junior pitcher Kristie Chin (Katy, TX) earned her 11th win at the mound to move to 11-3 on the year.
After a scoreless first inning, the Bears were able to gain a 2-0 lead in the second after senior catcher Amanda Asay (Prince George, BC) homered over the left field fence to bring home Thompson.
The Bears kept up the great hitting into the third inning and scored four runs to take a 6-0 lead. With one out and runners on first and second, Thompson doubled to left field to bring in a run and then Alyssa Caplan (San Mateo, CA) hit a pop fly just over the first baseman and advanced to second on a throwing error by the first baseman on her throw home as two Bears crossed the plate. Senior Andrea Browne (Vineland, NJ) hit a double to center field to bring in Caplan to increase Brown's lead to 6-0.
Brown was then able to score three runs in the fourth as Rothamel brought in Avery Silverstein (Woodbridge, CT) with a double to ceter field. Thompson followed up with a double of her own to bring home the next two runners to gain a 9-0 advantage.
After a short rain delay, the fifth inning started up and Bryant was able to get on the scoreboard when Laura Bowen doubled to bring in Reggie Burdo, but it wasn't enough as Chin shut down the rest of the batters to earn the 9-1 victory.
Chin received the win on the mound as she allowed just one run on four hits and struck out two. The Bears are back in action tomorrow when it hosts Dartmouth starting at 2:30 p.m.
