Lanzire Leads Women's Soccer to 1-0 Victory Over PennPhiladelphia, PA - Junior Kim Lanzire (Bristol, RI/Mt. Hope) scored her fourth goal in the last four games and eighth of the season to lead Brown (12-3, 4-1) to a 1-0 victory over Penn (7-7-1, 2-4) in an Ivy League soccer match at Penn Saturday afternoon.
Lanzire, who led the Bears with three shots, scored the loan goal of the game in the 76th minute on an assist from sophomore Caitlin Carey (Boxford, MA/Masconomet Regional) to give Brown the 1-0 victory and its 10th shutout of the season.
The Bears, who now need just one more victory to tie the school record for wins in a season (13, 1977, 1984), have not won 12 games since the 1990 season when they finished with a 12-3-0 record. With two games remaining, they are in need of two more shutouts to tie the school record of 12 shutouts in a season, set back in 1984.
The Brown defense, led by the goalkeeping tandem of junior Mary Jo Markle (West Chester, PA/Henderson) and freshman Sarah Gervais (Harrisville, RI/Mt. St. Charles Academy), has allowed just seven goals on the season. Gervais made one save during the second half.
The Bears, who remain tied for first place in the Ivy League with Harvard, Dartmouth and Princeton, will travel to Dartmouth on Wednesday, November 1 to face the Big Green in a must-win game in the hunt for the league title. Game time is at 1:30 p.m.
