Rahko Leads The Eagles To A 2-1 Victory Over BrownProvidence, R.I. - Freshman Sarah Rahko (Londonderry, NH/Londonderry) tallied twice to lead visiting Boston College (13-6, 4-1) to a 2-1 victory over Brown (11-3, 3-1) in a Northeast Regional soccer match at Stevenson Field Wednesday evening.
Rahko's unassisted goal just 2:33 into the game proved to be all the Eagles would need in their 2-1 victory. Rahko dribbled through the Brown defense, crossing from right to left across the front of the net, and then drilled the ball back into the opposite corner to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead.
In the 58th minute, Rahko added an insurance goal for Boston College as she maneuvered around Brown's defense in the same way, this time from left to right, booting the ball into the opposite corner for her second tally of the night.
However, Brown closed the gap with just under 20 minutes remaining. Junior defender Kelly Smith (Seaholm/Birmingham, MI) took a direct kick from the outside edge of the penalty box, which bounced off Boston College keeper Courtney Schaeffer (Walt Whitman/South Huntington, NY). Freshman Molly Cahan (Harvard-Westlake/Encino, CA) scored the lone Brown goal when she took advantage of the loose ball and fired it into the back of the net.
The Brown defense, led by the goalkeeping tandem of junior Mary Jo Markle (West Chester, PA/Henderson) and freshman Sarah Gervais (Harrisville, RI/Mt. St. Charles Academy), has allowed just seven goals on the season. Markle stopped four first half shots, while Gervais made five saves in the second half, as Brown was outshot by Boston College 19-13. Schaeffer stopped six Brown shots for the Eagles in 90 minutes of action.
The Bears, who need two more victories to tie the school record for wins in a season, will travel to Philadelphia on Saturday, October 28 to face Ivy rival Pennsylvania in a 2:30 game.
