Brown Snaps Two-Game Losing Streak With 2-0 Shutout Over ProvidenceProvidence, R.I. - Kim Lanzire (Bristol RI/Mt. Hope) scored her fifth goal of the season to lead the Bears (10-2, 2-1) to a 2-0 victory over Providence (5-10-1) in a Northeast regional women's soccer contest at Providence College Wednesday afternoon.
Lanzire received a pass from freshman Molly Cahan (Encino, CA/Harvard-Westlake) and booted the ball past Providence keeper Caroline Haines to get the Bears on the board with just over five minutes remaining in the first half.
Sophomore Caitlin Carey (Boxford, MA/Masconomet Regional) added an insurance goal for Brown when she took a pass from junior Laura Iden (Kenilworth, NJ/Union Catholic), carried the ball up the right flank and fired the ball in from 15 yards out.
The victory gives Brown its 10th win of the season and for the first time since 1994, the Bears have notched double-figures in the win column.
The Friars had many scoring opportunities in the second half, taking seven corner kicks and six shots, but strong goal tending by freshman Sarah Gervais (Harrisville, RI/Mt. St. Charles Academy) kept the shutout alive, Brown's ninth in 12 games. Junior Mary Jo Markle (West Chester, PA/Henderson) stopped two Providence shots in the first half, while Gervais made three saves in the final 45 minutes. Haines earned made 10 saves for the Friars as Brown outshot Providence 18-11.
The Bears will host Cornell in an Ivy League contest this Saturday, October 21 at 7:00 p.m.
